Pitchfork unwittingly disses Pitchfork.

Here is my favorite line from Pitchfork’s review of the new Morningwood disc:

The reality is, cutting a decent record takes more than a kooky stageshow and an insatiable urge to embarrass yourself. It also takes more than handclaps, call-and-response vocals, and dumb cheerleader cadences.

Wait, doesn’t that totally describe that Clap Your Hands Say Blah record they were all creaming about?

Personally I dig the new Morningwood disc, but then again I have nothing against music being fun.

  1. actually, it doesn’t.

  2. Fun?! Music is supposed to be EVIL!!!

  3. I guess the backlash against anything popular is to be expected, but it’s just so ridiculously stupid when it’s against Pitchfork. They post great reviews and they post bad reviews and you should just get used to it. I’m very glad they posted a very positive review of CYHSY because many people who like good music, yeah – including me – love the album and would probably never have heard it if it weren’t for Pitchfork. And what lame objections you have against the album. If you’d said you find Alec Ounsworth’s vocals intolerable I would have understood, but you obviously haven’t done any serious listening. Stop being jealous of Pitchfork and try appreciating the fact that they helped make a self-released album a hit. That’s actual indie rock, for once.

  4. Dear Lori,

As has been extensively notated, I have indeed been following CYHSY since long before PFork got a hold of the band. I have nothing personal against the cats other than the fact that I find them incredibly derivative and altogether boring. When PFork jumped all over them it was such a pathetically obvious attempt at “discovering” the next Arcade Fire that my ire was naturally raised. And that’s that.

For the record I actually enjoy reading PFork, do so every day and think most of the writing is at least engaging even when I don’t agree with it. THAT’S THE POINT OF GOOD CRITICISM!

I am not — and never have been — in the habit of disliking a band merely because I feel it’s my duty to join some sort of backlash movement. Next time maybe you should try and get the joke instead of lashing out because you think someone’s dissing your fave fave fave band for no good reason.

    Love,
    Tankboy
