  1. You spent a week in Austin and found no history? Janis got her chops here, what is wrong with her? Did you make the pilgramage to Threadgills, where she got her start? doubt it, you were more worried about the Flaming Lips “secret” gigs.

Austin is about Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, SRV, Janis, Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid, shall I go on???

  2. yeah, my hotel was next to threadgills.

i have nothing but respect for joplin. but no respect for bands that are copies of copies of copies of her, ya dig?

  3. We had to walk past Threadgills to get to Whattaburger.

  4. What the fuck are you even talking about? In the year and some months I’ve been listening to The Duke Spirit, there’s hasn’t been a single time Janis Joplin crossed my mind… not ONCE! And I’ve listened to them a lot in that time.

    Liela Moss pwnz you!

  5. The Dook Spirit

  6. paul, you must have been under duress during that time….

i didnt really think it until i saw them live a few weeks ago….

  7. The Duke Spirit definitely were in the top 3 worst bands I saw during SXSW.

Why the fuck was there any hype around this band? I wanted to punch myself in the face for sitting through the Jogger (eh, they were ok) and then half of Duke’s set on Saturday at Maggie Mae’s.

  8. we’ve all got opinions. i for one was rather impressed with the duke spirit. if anyone blew chunks it was the flaming lips. best shows for me were dengue fever and th’ faith healers.

  9. I’m liking the Duke Spirit album. Where’s the Janis Joplin comparison?? I would say it’s more PJ Harvey. Also: a one-line blog review is lazy ass.

  10. maybe the joplin thing comes out more live.

lazy ass maybe, but so is not signing your comments. :)

  11. I HIGHLY DISAGREE! I don’t see the Joplin comparison AT ALL. I loved her set and love the album!
