The Rub Goes On (Permanent?) Vacation

The Rub is one of our favorite music blogs. In fact we had the author, Paul Cox, write last week’s Tuesday Three.

I went to the blog today and was greeted with this message:

I’m currently getting more enjoyment out of reading other people’s blogs than I get writing in my own. I didn’t want to put up an official goodbye message or anything because that seems either a bit conceited or unnecessarily cryptic. Besides, there’s a good chance I may come back to it. I’m just taking (at least) a couple weeks off to clear my thoughts and decide whether or not I wish to continue.

If The Rub comes back we’ll be right there loving it like we always did. If not we still think Paul is a nicey.

New York Times on Lollapalooza

I wish there was a travelling music festival that interested me. Seriously.

The musical lineup, on two stages, was unambitious. On the main stage were Audioslave, Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age, the Donnas, the Distillers and Jurassic 5 ? grunge, punk and a smattering of hip-hop, as if music’s vanguard hadn’t changed in a decade. There was no electronica, no garage rock, no rhythm-and-blues and only a nod to the emo that now reigns on college campuses, with the band Billy Talent. The second stage seemed designed to deter listeners, with narrow entrances and competing noise from karaoke singers. Moby’s recent Area festivals have now out-Lollapalooza’d the founder. Regarding the Dismemberment of the Dismemberment Plan

Washington Post has a really good write up about the end of The Dismemberment Plan. Looks like everyone in the band will be up to something interesting, one way or another.

We Command All West Coast Readers to the Viper Room Tonight

As mentioned earlier this week, donewaiting.com favorite 84 Nash are playing in Los Angeles this week. Tonight they’re at the Viper Room. Go there. Fall in love. Rock till you die. Buy the bands alcohol. Tell the lead singer Kevin that you’re from donewaiting.com and he’ll love you as much as you love their music.

Go. This is not a recommendation, this is an order.

How You Feeling, Liz Phair?

From a Rolling Stone Interview:

Are you surprised by how much this record upset some people?

I think I feel bad for them because I wanted them to like it. I wanted them to have enough flexibility to say, “Well it’s not what I expected, she’s never going to make Guyville again but the tunes are kind of catchy and I can enjoy them.” I didn’t intend to hurt anyone, and I wasn’t trying to make anyone upset or let them down. I just made a record that I really like, and I worked pretty hard on it. I’m the kind of person that likes all sorts of music — I just want to hear really good music and I don’t care what it is. I assumed, I guess too much, that other people feel that way. Music is art and can be enjoyed at many levels for different reasons, but I think for a lot of people it was like I was in office and had an affair. There was a sense that a scandal had happened.

And, of course, our conversation about this record in the donewaiting.com message board continues to rage on and on.

Power Tools and Girls

Friday relief: girls in bikinis using power tools with some electroclash music behind it. Requires Quicktime.

This year’s models, in more than one way.

donewaiting/England: Buffalo Tom

Steve Miller, writer of the donewaiting.com UK column England Made Me gives us a nice account of Buffalo Tom and where they fit into his life:

I know that a lot of people see Buffalo Tom as workmanlike, as little more than a footnote to the whole college rock slacker Winnebago of the early nineties, but a lot of people can be wrong, and overlooking Buffalo Tom means they?re missing out on a substantial back catalogue of wrought guitar anthems and tender ballads. A very pleasurable read.
