The Tuesday Three As Chosen By Jon Hernandez of Hip Hop Anonymous

Each week donewaiting.com asks a guest writer, musician or magician to choose three albums they would recommend for the Tuesday Three: One album released within the next seven days, one released in 2003, and one released from the past or the future, no restriction.

Jon Hernandez is the main author of hiphopanonymous.net, an underground hip-hop blog with mainstream commentary that kicks ass now and takes names later.

Atmosphere – God Loves Ugly
Slug?s lyrics and DJ Ant?s beats have been described as the closest to emo hip-hop will ever get. “Fuck Earth-composed emo?” Atmosphere is from a planet that has prodded the wackos and mutilated the cows to figure out that thing called emotion. Slug preaches to our souls and it?s damn scary, but he?s managed to gather an almost cult-like following. Bands like Atmosphere don?t get groupies? they get psychos. On God Loves Ugly Ant throws down harder beats, Slug?s rhymes are more pissed off and altogether the album raps from the strange-ugly-confused-weird-nerd child within us all. Quite simply, it is pure genius.

Radiohead – Hail to the Thief
Radiohead has always had albums that require more than one listen. I was a fan of the repeat button with OK Computer. I remember first listening to Kid A and thinking it was the strangest album I had ever heard in full. But after keeping it in my headphones for a week, I found the sounds to be revolutionary. This year Hail to the Thief was leaked on the net before it?s June 10 release date so the bootleg was an unfinished product? Big Deal. I keep playing it because it is a divine mix of those two previous albums. At some point when Hail to the Thief was being made, Thom Yorke was so sick of the fame and the spotlight he became depressed (as if that never happens to rock stars). After taking another rocker?s advice, he turned off the light in his hotel room, crawled under a table, covered his ears, and told himself, “I?m not here. This isn?t happening.” I am not sure why some musicians have odd ways of coming up with songs, but if Yorke needs to suck on a pacifier, wear diapers, and bang on the rails of his crib to make music, that?s cool with me.

Black Eyed Peas – Elephunk
A few weeks ago the Black Eyed Peas were on tour. When they took the stage, hordes of teenaged girls screamed, squealed, and some even knew the words, thereby passively labeling the group as teen pop stars. How in the hell could a once underground hip-hop group come to this? They?ve been on tour with Justin Timberlake and Dirty Christina, that?s how. Having Timberlake, Travis Barker of Blink 182, and Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach featured on their third album Elephunk just adds fuel to superstardom. I?ve also heard BEP emcee will.i.am is hosting his own freestyle impromptu show on MTV, but I hate that channel, so I?ve never seen it. So for the album, I?m just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Sonic Youth Cancels Two Shows With Wilco

Sonic Youth says:

Due to family illness we?ve had to cancel tonights show in Boston and tomorrow?s in Wallingford, CT. Wilco will of course perform—tonight Mission of Burma will substitute for us in Boston, I don?t know what?s happening in CT.

Anyone wishing a refund can obtain on at the point where they purchased the tickets.

The remaining shows—New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC WILL GO ON AS PLANNED WITH SONIC YOUTH APPEARING. We?re sorry for any confusion or disappointment this whole situation has caused—it obviously couldn?t be helped.

I did get to see Wilco and Sonic Youth together last week, and the show was great. Expect full review soon, soon, soon.

dw/signal: The Thing About iTunes and Singles vs. Album Sales

Bryce really breaks down the single vs. album debate raging on regarding the Apple iTunes store. Read what he wrote, dude because he explains it much better than I ever could.

ALSO! Intelligent conversion of the Apple Music Store by our donewaiting.com readers continues to happen right here, right now in the message board.

Whew

And while “American Idol” may have posted huge numbers in the world of television ratings, that fame definitely did not translate to the big screen as 20th Century Fox’s “From Justin to Kelly” debuted in the No. 11 slot with a dismal score of an estimated $2.9 million from 2,001 sites. ’nuff said.

Festival Meltdown #5: Cold Drops From Lollapalooza

By the end of the summer, how many stories of festivals-gone-bad will I have posted? Let’s keep a count. This one will be story #5.

Hard rock act Cold has pulled out of its main stage slot on the upcoming Lollapalooza tour. A statement released by the band’s representatives says that Cold “will take a short break from the road.” (full story)

Bye bye, Cold.

Random stuff I’m too lazy to quote or expand upon:

(one story had nothing to do with music, quite honestly)

Danica Johnson, writer of our Indianapolis column, “Indy Ink”, is hosting a show for Benchmark Records featuring The Pieces, among others. More info here.

Tankboy, our Chicago writer, is hosting a show Saturday @ The Note featuring Analog Radio and Light FM, among others. Clicky, clicky!.

Finally, Chip Midnight, writer of Atomic Ned, isn’t hosting any shows but he’ll be at the Caviar show today in Chicago. Read about it here.

Me, Charlesworth, Miller, Sellthe, Cobb, and the Brother will be having a party without them at a nondisclosed location.
