Field Day Wrap Up

Upset people, long lines, many cancelled bands, a shitty Beastie Boys set, a great Radiohead set, and Beck breaks a rib:

Maybe the Beasties were thrown off by their early start time. They started nearly an hour early after Beck had to cancel his set. The rain reportedly got the best of Beck, who was rushed to the hospital after he reportedly slipped while dancing to Underworld and cracked a rib. It was a testament to the strength of Field Day’s lineup that his last-minute cancellation didn’t greatly upset the crowd. (full story)

Okay, we’re done writing about this disaster. If you went to it, though, please tell us all about it!

donewaiting/rochester updates

We’ve mentioned Rochester so many times on this site in the past few days you’d think it was one of the dw/cities we have covered. But it’s not.

It all started when our NJ writer/musician/friend Stephen wrote about his adventures in the land of Rochester. Then Charlesworth wrote, in Durst Watch, about Marilyn Manson being banned in the city (seriously, are we in 1999 again?)

It all boiled up to Charlesworth reading Stephen’s negative comments about Rochester (the place Charlesworth grew up) and now Cworth wants to battle Stephen to the death.

Confused yet? Me too. The bottom line is this: donewaiting.com writers are underpaid.

Get That Positive Spin Out of Hip Hop

Jon from Hip Hop Anonymous recently attended a Hip Hop Speaks panel in NYC and the best quote definitely came from MTV’s Sway:

?For the past three weeks I?ve been filling in at Hot 97 doing their morning show. And at Hot 97, everything is based on gossip and drama. ? People come up to me and say stuff like, ?yo, I love you on MTV man, but you keep stuff too positive.? So I guess positive isn?t the trend? And a few others come at me saying I give too much information. I mean, should I report less and keep the hood dumb? It?s as though before I give them food for thought I gotta give them junk food. I went to Summer Jam last week and got booed by 50,000 people. It was a beautiful moment.? (full story)

This was the last meeting in the Hip Hop Speaks series, so you missed out.

  • Bone Crusher Raps About Mariah’s Sex Appeal, Talks Up His Own

I love reading about Mariah’s sex appeal right after learning who Ariel Sharon is.

Jewel’s New Slutty Image = Album Sales!

Let this be a lesson for anyone who thinks people don’t fall for image:

Jewel released her new album, 0304, on Tuesday (June 3) and according to her record company, Atlantic Records, in only its first two days at retail, the album instantly became the No. One-selling album in the U.S., putting her on track to have the highest-debuting album of her career on next week’s SoundScan and Billboard 200 album charts. The album has been fueled by the success of the first single “Intuition,” which is currently climbing the charts. (full story)

What’s In An Album Cover?

You’ll be surprised how many album covers are actually knockoffs of other albums from way back when. Example:

Many many more examples found at the knockoff*project.

Eminem Don’t Need No Stinking “Source” Award

Yes, he holds a grudge:

Eminem, the headliner of Summer Jam 10, took time on stage to show his anger toward the Source magazine. During a break in his performance on Tuesday (June 3) at Giants Stadium, Eminem hurled his 2000 Source Award for Lyricist Of The Year to the ground. (full story)

More on Pearl Jam’s Lack of Record Label

Interesting point their manager, Kelly Curtis, makes regarding starting their own record label and some of the difficulties:

“[Epic] still has the rights to some things,” Curtis says. Epic manufactures Pearl Jam’s official live bootlegs and will put out the rarities album. The band has met with executives from other labels, including J Records CEO Clive Davis. Pearl Jam have looked into independent options such as releasing new music over the Internet and starting their own label. “America is not the issue — it’s overseas,” says Curtis. “We do well there. But if we try to collect money in Chile, I don’t know how to do that. We’ll need help.” (full story)

I’m watching this closely.
