Donewaiting.com’s Final Field Day Post (Preshow)

You think you’re doing a good thing by buying your Field Day Festival ticket via Radiohead’s merch company but instead you sorta get screwed. So says loyal donewaiting.com reader and message board writer, e.:

ok, so the people who are die-hard radiohead fans and went through their merchandising company w.a.s.t.e. are getting royally dicked in this situation. this giants stadium thing is lame, and i really would rather go to a show in the city more than this now. so instead of getting a refund for my ticket, like everyone who went through ticketmaster is getting, w.a.s.t.e. has taken the liberty “as a special service to w.a.s.t.e. customers” to NOT give ANY full refunds to previous ticketholders, but instead automatically transfer 2-day passes into an admission for the thing at giants stadium. which, in order to gain admission, one must bring an email confirmation of ticket purchases AND a photo ID… meaning i can’t even sell the fucking thing. that’s $80+ down the drain for me. THANK YOU W.A.S.T.E. for STEALING money from a fucking SUPPORTER.

I dont know all the details, but it sounds like a shit deal for the fans who would rather not go to the show. Maybe WASTE gets a commission per ticket and didnt want to give it up? I dunno.

Either way, read more about e.’s tale and help her out here

How’s It Going, Sonic Youth? You Playing With The Stooges in Detroit Or What?

On August 14th Sonic Youth will perform with Iggy and the Stooges in Detroit. The original Stooges permanently scarred music from 1967- 1973. The reunited Stooges delivered a pummeling set which was the uncontested toast of the Coachella festival in California in April. (official site)

Thanks for answering my question!

What’s Up, Darren Jessee, Former Drummer of Ben Folds Five?

Darren Jessee will be playing upcoming dates with his new band REMOVER. The band features Darren on lead vocals and guitar and Mark Price, formerly of the Archers of Loaf, on drums.

June 7, 2003 – The Garage in Winston-Salem
June 8, 2003 – Jammin’ Java in Vienna, VA
June 10, 2003 – Fez in New York
June 27, 2003 – go! in Chapel Hill

This info came from the Ben Folds Sony/mailing list, so maybe their friendship remains strong … or contractual obligations!

The Big Field Day Fuck Up

Concert to go on, but as a totally different beast. Key items bolded:

After plans fell through to hold this weekend’s Field Day festival in Riverhead, N.Y., the two-day event is being abbreviated to a single-day concert beginning at 12 p.m. ET Saturday (June 7) at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The lineup will still feature Radiohead, Beck, and the Beastie Boys, but a number of previously announced artists are expected to drop off the bill.

Tickets to the new event will go on sale today at 5 pm ET via Ticketmaster. Previously issued Field Day tickets will not be valid and refunds will be issued at points of purchase. (full story)

The word clusterfuck comes to mind.

The Beatles vs. iTunes

Education for those not aware: The Beatles started their own record label, Apple Records.

Will there be a Apple Records vs. Apple showdown? Who knows. But here’s an interesting bit of history I didn’t know.

Apple Computer’s Steve Jobs was such a Beatle fan that he named his company after the record label. But the Beatles, who are notoriously protective of their rights and quite litigious, weren’t so happy with Jobs. In 1981 they made him sign something agreeing never to go into the music business in order to keep a name they had trademarked. But then in the mid-1980s, Apple Computer started producing music files and software. It had to pony up $26 million when the Beatles sued, and again promised not to go into any more music businesses. With the advent of iPod and iTunes, there’s another lawsuit that could potentially happen.

Jewel on the Cover of Blender

All the cool kids have already seen this crazy photo shoot of Jewel in Blender, but not ol’ Rob Duffy. If you have a link or JPGs please point me in the right direction.

donewaiting/updates: Houston, England, Columbus, NJ, Atomic Ned

Many donewaiting.com writers working their columns like a Thanksgiving Dinner:

  • Our England writer, Steve Miller, gives us the lowdown on up and comers Hope of the States here and tells us about the new Mclusky single there.
  • Houston Staffer David Cobb interviews Mr. Plow.
  • Brother Stephen returns after a weeklong absence, and contrary to popular belief, he was not out finding himself.
  • I deliver a Columbus OH non-update.
  • Finally, Chip Midnight talks about a pivotal turning point in The Honey’s career. Special guest appearance by these random dudes:

  • Pearl Jam Working the Live Scene

Normally when I go to a concert, I prefer the sets from the band to lean towards the shorter side. Not so with Pearl Jam. When they play, I want them to go on for three hours. And most times, they do.

Undeterred by a fan walk-out at its U.S. bow, the Pearl Jam 2003 tour is on a near-sellout track. Wrapping up its 22-date first leg May 3 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Penn., the 18 Pearl Jam shows reported to Billboard Boxscore grossed an average of $434,050. Overall attendance clocked in at 80% of venues’ total capacity, averaging 11,974 per concert. (full story)

I’m anxiously awaiting to see them this month in Columbus.

    New Music Tuesday Buying Guide

If we were to go to the local Whirlie Birdie Records and buy music for you tomorrow, this is what we’d put in your shopping cart:

    “shootenanny!” by eels

    “cool rock” by chris lee

    “0304” by jewel

True Story Swear to God: In 1996 I was the entertainment editor for my school paper, the Kentucky Kernel of the University of Kentucky. Jewel is playing in town (opening for Edwin McCain) so I call up their press people to get an interview.

Normally, when you’re doing interviews for college papers, they’re show previews and normally done on the phone. But this time around the Atlantic Records Press person sets me up with an in-person interview with Jewel! 19 year old geeky me (which is not much different from 26 year old geeky me) is really excited! I meet Jewel, we do an interview for about an hour, have a great time, and she even draws me a picture of an angel. Since then I’ve been a fan.

Moral of the story? If you want me to like your band, draw me a picture of an angel.

Madonna’s Upcoming Children Book (Watch Out Harry Potter!)

    Sing along, Cracker Style:

What the world needs now is another folk singer musician-turned-children-author like I need a hole in my head

Madonna is expected to make publishing history when her book, titled the English Roses, is released in 42 languages in more than 100 countries–making it possibly the biggest simultaneous multi-language release. The English Roses, the first in a series of five books, will be released on September 15, and is a story for young readers about “friendship, jealousy, sleepover parties, and fairy godmothers,” according to a release. (full story)

As far as I can tell, you can’t pre-order it on Amazon.com yet, but if you’d like, go ahead and buy “Madonna Nude: 1979”. Here’s a description of that book:

From the foreword: `On 12 February, 1979, a quiet, shy young woman walked into my studio for the first time. She was the nude model for my photography class that evening. She said that she was a dancer, her name was Madonna Ciccone. She was not only a welcome relief from the average lumpy, but sweet, art-class model, but she was also one of the loveliest models I ever photographed. This book is a celebration of the human form, a dedication to an innocent, determined young woman and to all figure models. It is a tribute to Madonna and anyone like her who aspires and through ambition, hard work and perseverance, achieves their goal. Bravo.`

Seriously, why did I just devote so much space to Madonna? Slow news day.
