*UPDATED* Trouble in Hipster and Hippie Paradise
Bonnaroo and Field Day Festival may have some problems on their hand:
The greatest problem is this: With the first concert less than two weeks away, the town has yet to receive the necessary permit from Suffolk County. That won’t happen without an intermunicipal agreement, allowing Suffolk police to supplement the town’s tiny force. The promoters will pay the bill for this policing, but they can’t cut the check until the two governments reach agreement. That requires action by the town board and the county legislature, but the legislature is not scheduled to meet again until after the June event. Riverhead signed the contract for the June event on Feb. 20. So it should have moved the permit process much farther along by now. (full story)
Sounds like a disaster in the making. I’m still going to the Siren Fest, for those keeping track at home.
[thanks for the link, chip!]
UPDATE UPDATE!
The Field Day Festival permit was denied:
County health officials denied the permit today after Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said his force wouldn’t be able to handle the expected crowd of 50,000. On Friday, county officials informed the town they wouldn’t be able to help with extra police officers because doing so would require an agreement between the Riverhead town board and the Suffolk county legislature. This wouldn’t have been possible, since the legislature doesn’t meet until after the June 7 and 8 concert. (full story)
All hope is not lost, yet. Stay tuned.

Kazaa to patch ‘serious’ vulnerability
Hey, all you naughty people using Kazaa, you need to get a security patch:
A security researcher recently found a potentially critical vulnerability in the program which drives the FastTrack network. FastTrack is used by peer-to-peer software service including Kazaa and iMesh. Joltid, the maker of FastTrack, initially said the flaw was not serious, but has since done an about-face and plans to plug the loophole. (full story)

The All Golden Opening for Guided by Voices
As you may know, one of our favorite Ohio bands is Cleveland’s very own The All Golden. Chris from the band recently e-mailed me to share the news that they’re opening for Guided By Voices for two shows in June:
June 26th – Grand Rapids, MI @ The Intersection
June 27th – Akron, OH @ The Lime Spider
Good news, indeed.

San Francisco Says Hello
Okay, we’re back from San Francisco and the city wanted to be sure that I said hello to everyone. The wedding was great, Amoeba was great, Kid Robot was great, the Sea Lions were great, the food was great, and the cable car was fun.
Thanks to the boys (Tankboy, Bro Stephen, Chip) for keeping the main page alive and well in my absence. They sure are cute and nice.
I’ve got a few notes that are worth posting about the visit, but right now I must go to sleep. And so should you.

Going Back to Cali
Like I said last week, I’m going to be out of town until Monday. Going back to San Francisco for the wedding of my two dear friends, Patricia and Eric. This will be my first time back to SF since I moved away about a year and a half ago.
Our first stop once we get into town? Like you have to ask….

Behave, play nice, and the rest of the writers are running the show until I get back. Please forgive me if I take longer than usual to respond to your e-mail.

Holy! Marilyn Manson Hits #1 on Billboard
Who would have imagined? His last record debuted at #13 (it’s a pretty good album, honestly) so I thought this new record of his was gonna tank. I was wrong:
Marilyn Manson’s “The Golden Age of Grotesque” gives the theatrical rocker the second No. 1 album of his career. One of four albums to debut inside the top-20, the Interscope release sold 118,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, to debut on top of The Billboard 200. Manson last reached the top of the chart with 1998’s “Mechanical Animals,” which moved 223,000 copies in its first week. (full story)
