DVD Singles

That wacky music industry will try anything to squeeze more money from you. Enter: the DVD single.

DVD singles ? digital videodiscs that typically include two music videos along with extra features ? represent a market that is just beginning to be charted by the music business. Some record labels ? in an industry suffering a two-year sales slump ? hope that the new format can become the modern-day successor to the vinyl 45 single. Retailers, however, are unsure whether to place them in video or audio departments, in part because there is no standard packaging. (full story)

If you’ve ever purchased one of these DVD singles, please tell us all about it in the message board

Right Now, In The Desert, Rock is Sweating

Coachella day one has past, and here is a review. I’m sure we’ll get more complete reviews starting Monday and Tuesday, but right now I am wishing I was out there in the desert, losing my mind, rocking out like it was the last night on Earth.

New York Times Reviews Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” Video

It’s very strange to see the New York Times review the “Hurt” video several months after it came out, but they just did. I know the internet has skewed my perception of time, as I now expect all forms of media to be discussed on the web moments they’ve hit the ideaspace, but seeing the NYTimes this far behind was a bit shocking.

(Okay, seriously, it wasn’t that shocking, but it’s worth noting nonetheless)

A definitive oral history: Revealing The White Stripes

The Detroit Free Press has an excellent history of the White Stripes, complete with many many interviews. It’s a long motherfucking read, but it’s worth it. One of my favorite quotes:

One time me and Jack and Greg, my roommate, went to dinner; we came home and my dog Barkie had chewed my couch — a big hole. Jack was like, “Hold on, I’ll be right back.” And he went to Brian Muldoon’s house and came back and fixed the whole thing. This was like a year ago — he’d already been on the cover of magazines. And he still reupholstered my furniture.

That’s one of many many many great things in the article.
