Idlewild and the Benefits of Local Support

Me and about 80 other people saw Idlewild last night at the Newport in Columbus OH. This is a venue that holds many many people. As you could imagine, the venue was empty.

In the message board we started to talk about why this sucked, and it spiralled into a heated discussion about the benefits of a local band opening for a national act. Read, enjoy, respond.

donewaiting/Houston: Greg Wood Interview

Our Houston writer, David Cobb, reports in with an interview with local musician Greg Wood. It’s a really good interview, and I encourage you to read it right now. Y’all need some Texas flavor in you today.

Speaking of the Dixie Chicks:

Bruce Springsteen Offers Support to Dixie Chicks

People are still up in arms about the Dixie Chicks? Jesus.

The Boss lends the Chicks a supporting hand:

The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for exercising their basic right to express themselves. To me, they’re terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. For them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and even entire radio networks, for speaking out is un-American.

The pressure coming from the government and big business to enforce conformity of thought concerning the war and politics goes against everything that this country is about – namely freedom. Right now, we are supposedly fighting to create freedom in Iraq, at the same time that some are trying to intimidate and punish people for using that same freedom here at home.

I don’t know what happens next, but I do want to add my voice to those who think that the Dixie Chicks are getting a raw deal, and an un-American one to boot. I send them my support.

Bjork Live Boxed Set

Bjork put out a box set last year around the same time she put out a “Best of” album. It was pretty confusing, and the result for me was that I didn’t buy either. She’s at it again, that wiley Icelandic beauty, but this time with a live boxed set:

As her summer North American tour takes shape, Bjork has unveiled plans to release new versions of her four studio albums as well as a series of DVDs. On the album front, the artist has gathered live versions of the songs from the albums “Debut,” “Post,” “Homogenic,” and “Vespertine” and will repackage them in June or July as part of a limited edition “Live Box Set.” (full story)

I’ll probably get this one.

Madonna’s “American” Life

Someone pointed out to me the humor of Madonna’s album being called “American Life” when she’s currently living in the UK. Heh. Anyway, Washington Post gives the new album an unfavorable review:

As a lyricist, Madonna is insufferable, and her whine suffuses and suffocates “American Life.” The stardom-as-mortal-burden idea is among the more insipid cliches out there, and it’s especially absurd coming from Madonna, in part because she has so relentlessly, unabashedly pursued stardom for more than two decades and lived off the glamour-puss culture she now claims to revile. Remember when Madonna was cool?

Wilco Offers New EP Online For Free

Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wilco made headlines awhile back for releasing “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” on their website long before it was released commercially. Well, looks like they’re at it again.

There’s been some talks about the “Kamera EP” that was released in Australia only and was supposed to be released here in the States but then got scrapped. Well, looks like you will be able to get it from the band, FOR FREE, on their website.

Those crazy kids have done it again.

This time, though, I think you need to put your purchased Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD into your CDROM and then it will unlock that part of the website. Go here for more information.

This is why Wilco is a national treasure.

The Sun on MTV.COM

Local boys The Sun got a write up on MTV’s site:

The Sun seem hit the ground running when Love & Death was released in February. A tour with hip New Yorkers the Natural History led to a show at the South by Southwest music conference, which bled into a tour opening up for Hot Hot Heat. And with that having just ended, the band will roll right into priming crowds for the fuzzy-bunny spectacle that is the Flaming Lips. (full story)

When the Sun is on, they are fucking on and they will rock your skull off your neck.

Announcing Reverbose Records

One thing I love to see in music is forward movement. New technology, new sounds, new approaches to business. Change. We try to educate people about that on donewaiting.com, when we see bands or people doing something different, expanding their bag of tricks with something new.

I love that. We love that.

It’s happening around the world. Whether it’s Pearl Jam’s use of MP3 technology (offering every concert on this tour in MP3 format the day after the show), or
Wilco’s releasing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot on the internet, for free, before it was available for purchase.

And things like this are even happening locally. Even in Columbus OH.

What I’m talking about right now is a brand new label in town, Reverbose Records. Formed by members of Miranda Sound and Stepford Five, Reverbose is a full-service record label that is trying to move the music business forward. These guys are building upon the success they are having locally and reaching out to the rest of the world using the same work ethic that has made them a Columbus success.

These are bands you need to know about.

I’ve talked to everyone involved in this label for hours and I’m convinced they are doing something great here. It’ll start off small, sure, but it’s going to pick up fast, I can tell. One thing I’ve realized since running donewaiting.com is that a lot of people conduct business poorly. If you have your shit together, you’re already ten steps ahead of the game. Reverbose has their shit together.

I’m happy to announce that donewaiting.com is going to co-sponsore the first ever Reverbose Records showcase on June 14 @ Little Brother’s in Columbus OH. The previously mentioned Stepford Five and Miranda Sound will perform, as well as Ken Gould and John Chinn.

Speaking of John, he’s the label’s first signee. Is that a word? I don’t know. Anyway, Reverbose plans to put out a Jon Chinn record very soon. You may know Jon as the lead singer of Pretty Mighty Mighty, one of the best Columbus bands to come out of the Buckeye State in the last few years. If you don’t know about them, change that.

I think the plan is to release Jon’s album and then release an album from someone out of town. Don’t quote me on that. Ask the label yourself. What’s important to note is that it’s not a label that’s just promoting Columbus bands. While the roots of the tree are planted here, the forest is going to sprout up across the country.

For more information about the label, I really encourage you to visit their site. You can get a statement of purpose from the label, MP3s, tourdates, all the sort of good stuff you’ve come to expect from a website.

Moving music forward. That’s what it’s all about.
