What Was the First Compact Disc You Ever Bought?

This was the first ever compact disc I bought, circa 1990:

Yes, that’s right. Paula Abdul, “Shut up And Dance: The Remix Album.” Why didn’t I just buy the non-remix album? Why Paula Abdul? I don’t know. I was a weird kid.

I’m trying to track all of the key CDs I bought in my life, which ones made huge impacts on me (Sonic Youth, Dirty), which album opened up new genres for me, etc. It will be an interesting music map if I work it out.

But until then, I’m curious as to what was the first compact disc you bought. Let me know here, in our message board.

Bonus points if you remember your first tape, record, or 8-track.

Beware Metallica’s Collection of Energy (Whatever That Means)

Metallica, regarding their new album:

“The way this record was created, the process of this record, everything just sits in a different place, a very organic place,” explained Ulrich. “Usually in the past, we have been guilty of knowing [the singles] or at least narrowing it down to this song or that song. But this time around, you figure it out. It just doesn’t really seem like a singles type of album. It’s more of a collection of energy.” (full story)

Ummm.

The Bridges and Tunnels Saga

Have you been reading Bridges and Tunnels lately? Stephen Mejias, who writes this NYC music blog for us here at donewaiting.com is writing a motherfucking saga over the last two weeks.

It was supposed to be an innocent review of two Columbus bands (Rancid Yak and Miranda Sound) who performed recently in NYC but has turned into something so much else. Here’s a SMALL taste:

The Rancid Yak Butter Tea Party put on a show that, to me, was like an hour-long version of some sort of ?Bohemian Rhapsody.? But a lot more Bohemian, and a lot more Rhapsody. A lot more everything. It?s fucked up. There?s a lot more metal. And a lot more punk. A lot more math. A lot more swing. A lot more soul. A lot more rhythm and blues. A lot more plain old rock. A lot more pretty. And a lot more ugly. I think there was even some jazz in there. Probably a lot of it, actually. There was a lot of ass-wiggling. A lot of noise. A lot of experimental weirdness. A lot more (and better) use of theremin than I?ve ever seen (including the time I saw Jon Spencer). A lot more a lot more.

The saga begins here. Read the entry, then scroll up to read the next one. Then the next. It’s really great stuff. When it’s complete we’ll give it special treatment on donewaiting.com, you bet.

Live Review: Polyphonic Spree in Chicago

Tankboy checks in with entry #2 to his donewaiting.com Chicago column, Lost in Guyville, with a review of last night’s Polyphonic Spree show:

Leader Tim DeLaughter hopped about the stage like a man standing in a puddle with a live wire taped to his feet and the choir behind him jumped and swayed and generally came off as a version of Up With People gone terribly awry. The sheer sonic volume of the band was enough to shear the eyebrows off folks standing too close to the stage but nobody really cared as jaws dropped in awe of the impeccable timing of the band and its expert handling of some pretty wild arrangements. (full review)

Remember how happy I was when I announced Lost in Guyville as a new addition to the site? You can erase all that because I’m jealous over the fact that I haven’t seen the Spree yet.

Just kidding. Sorta.

PS – I saw Yo La Tengo last night and they did indeed rule. Expect review and MANY LARGE PHOTOS this weekend.

Donewaiting.com cornered the indie rock scene last night, y’all.

Sigur Ros + Radiohead + Dance Troupe = WTF?

I love Sigur Ros. I love Radiohed. But if I were to bet money, I’d bet I’m not going to love this:

Sigur Ros return to the U.S. in October for a collaboration with Radiohead and choreographer Merce Cunningham at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The two bands will create music for Cunningham’s troupe, which will dance to their live performances. “It’s going to be quite experimental,” says Birgisson. “On the day it’s performed, we get to see the dance for the first time, and they hear the music. It will be spontaneous — and strange.” (full story)

I’m sure obsessed Radiohead and Sigur Ros fans around the world will love it, although I wonder if when you buy a ticket to the show you’ll be sectioned off to a certain part of the crowd, similar to what they might do at a college sporting event. Hmm.
