Atomic Ned’s Ear

Atomic Ned has started a new weekly feature, In My Ear. Basically, it will be Chip’s initial reactions to all the new music he’s obtained over the past week. An example:

Chris Robinson ? New Earth Mud: If you?re expecting a Black Crowes knockoff, think again. Robinson has found love and has mellowed his ways quite a bit. True, he?s got such a distinctive voice that you?ll always associate it with the Black Crowes, but with this release Robinson could easily win over Ryan Adams fans (?Silver Car? is the standout track).

The Year the Music Died

This is a really thorough article about the problems facing the music industry, written in language that people like me and you can understand.

To leap the hurdles posed by digital technology, the industry must find a way to make money selling downloaded music on a per-track basis, allow in-store CD burning, slash recording costs with cheap software and hardware, and change artists’ contracts to reflect the new economic reality. Doing any one of these will be next to impossible. Doing all of them would be one of the more amazing turnarounds in business history. (full story)

Coldplay to Perform at First Kimmel Show (Post Superbowl)

Coldplay is scheduled to perform the very first Jimmy Kimmel Show, airing after the Super Bowl. This is why this show is going to rule.

Can’t Stop the Redesign

I’ve talked about it for great lengths, and here it is. The all new donewaiting.com redesign. Like a brand new pair of shoes, we’re still getting adjusted to it, stretching it out to make it fit just right.

Don’t bother going to the about us, contact us, or links pages just yet. I didnt fill them out yet. Soon. Soon.

We’ve put a lot of work into this, and we really hope you like it. I’ll roll out my list of thank you’s later, but here’s the two new columns you should care about:

  • Atomic Ned by Chip Midnight. I’ve become pretty good friends with Chip since starting this site, and I’m really happy to have him join the cause. If you’ve not been to Chip’s website, Swizzle-Stick, you’re really doing yourself a disservice. It’s one of the few music review sites that are actually good. As for what Atomic Ned
is, this is what he says: “Writings and ramblings from a pop culture-obsessed, music-loving, sports page-reading, father of two who doesn’t know how to use hypens.”

  • England Made Me by Steve Miller. I became friends
with Steve via my trolling around the Delphi Message Boards (home to the older, shittier donewaiting.com message board). Steve lives in South East England (the one in Europe), and is going to give us a UK perspective of music. He’s also an occasional writer for comic book magazine Borderline.

So mess around with the site, and let me know what you think. E-mail me or post up comments in the message board.

I’m tired, and I’d like to sleep now.

  • Pearl Jam Announces Tourdates

Okay, really, this will be the last thing I post before the redesign.

    Get your Pearl Jam tourdates.

Three in Ohio. Moo hoo ha ha.

    SIDENOTE

This was listed in the Q&A part of Pearl Jam’s site:

Q: I heard a rumor that Sleater-Kinney will be opening for Pearl Jam on the upcoming tour. Is there any truth to this rumor? I would love to see these two bands play together!
    A: Hope so.

The Calm Before the Redesign Storm

I have about ten things to write about in OH COLUMBUS, about twenty things to write about here. But all of that is on hold as we work around the clock behind the scenes to get the donewaiting.com redesign out the door.

Until then, play around in the message board. It’s safe there.

NOTE: As we move over the new look and feel tonight, it may get a bit crazy. Be careful. Please.

Piracy Blamed in Wherehouse Closing Down Retail Stores

Mind your manners, kids, it has nothing to do with charging $21.99 for a CD.

Music and video retailer Wherehouse Entertainment Inc. filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code Tuesday, blaming illegal downloading of music on the Internet. (full story)

    You hurtful, uncaring internet!

    Double the Outkast

The next Outkast album will be a double disc. Big Boi on one, Dre on the other. Each disc will have it’s own single, it’s own video, it’s own promotion. But it will be one release.

    Beware of jumping sharks.

    Now It Gets Interesting

    Ooooooooh:

In a 37-page decision, U.S. District Judge John Bates said the wording of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act requires Verizon to give the Recording Industry Association of America the name of a Kazaa subscriber who allegedly was sharing more than 600 music recordings. Bates said “the court disagrees with Verizon’s strained reading of the act, which disregards entirely the clear definitional language.” (full story)

RIAA is lame and weak. If I were to post up every article that came across the wires about RIAA, I’d have to quit my day job. Instead, I encourage you to go to the EFF. They’re nicey.

    Dismemberment Plan Calling it Quits

From the mouth of the horse:

We realize that the question “why?” is going to be asked more than a few times, but we really don’t know if we can answer that anytime soon. Or ever, for that matter. The best answer we can come up with is that we felt like we’d accomplished all we could as a songwriting and recordmaking unit, and that we wanted–as individuals–to try things that can be precluded by living the lifestyle of the touring musician.
