donewaiting.com Content Explosion! Jeff Buckley Tribute Show Wrap-Up Now Live

I couldn’t make it to the Jeff Buckley tribute show in Columbus, so I did the next best thing: I got many of the bands to write up about their experiences of the show. After all, it’s sometimes best to just let the musicians do the talking, and let the music writers shut the hell up. Get all the action right here!

Thanks to all the bands and TallGirl for helping me put this together.

Lead Singer Quits Midnight Oil

Who even knew they were still together? Not this anti-environmentalist. Read it.

George Bush Destroying International Music Scene

“The government’s new visa rules, designed to shut U.S. borders to terrorists, are having an unintended effect in the cultural world: They are keeping out international performing artists, too. Organizers of cultural events in the Bay Area and across the nation say they’re being forced to cancel and change scheduled acts, squeezing the groups financially and depriving audiences of seeing acclaimed singers, filmmakers and other luminaries from foreign countries. Last weekend, the Afro-Cuban All Stars, one of Cuba’s most famous musical acts, was scheduled to perform in Berkeley in front of sold-out audiences. But the new visa policy prevented them from entering the United States.” (full story)

Gone to Jersey

I’m racing against the snow tonight, hoping to reach NJ before all of Pennsylvania freezes up on me. Should be in NJ by 3am tonight, right in time for the holidays.

While in Jerz I’ll be catching one of my favorite bands, Yo La Tengo in Hoboken (their home).

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. I’ll be back Monday with the biggest content package donewaiting has ever done. Moo hoo ha ha.

Last Minute Q4 Rush

These last few months of 2002 have brought an unexpected avalanche of great music. Off the top of my head, new releases from: Pearl Jam, Sigur Ros, Tori Amos, Christina Aguilera, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Badly Drawn Boy, Primal Scream, Jurassic 5.

All of these have high probabilities of being in the donewaiting top 20 of the year. Except maybe the Aguilera.

Keep ’em coming, boys and girls. Don’t stop now.

My First Contribution to Swizzle-Stick

The first review I’ve written for Swizzle-Stick is now online. I give my humble opinion of the beautiful new Primal Scream album. Read it.

On another note, NME recently reported that Primal Scream is releasing a greatest hits collection. I’m still gonna just buy all their records instead.

More Wilco, Thank You

Yes. Yes.
“The long-awaited collaboration between Wilco and part-time Seattle supergroup the Minus 5, originally slated for release by the now-extinct Mammoth Records, will finally see the light of day Feb. 25 via Yep Roc Records. Titled “Down With Wilco,” the album features Minus 5 principals Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, and Ken Stringfellow working with Wilco members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, and Leroy Bach as well as a host of others, including the Spinanes’ Rebecca Gates and High Llamas frontman Sean O’Hagan.” (full story)

And So Another Music News Website Closes Down

allstar news was actually one of the few good, original content music sites on the internet. They had a solid run, from 1996-2002. In real world terms, that’s 100 years. Read about it.

In the Real World, People Call That the Radio

I don’t buy camera-mp3-fax machine combos. Who needs it? I don’t need my fax machine to play MP3s, and quite honestly I don’t need my cell phone to stream CD quality music. But maybe you do.

“Sony and other record labels are increasingly looking toward the wireless arena as a promotional vehicle, a potential source of revenue, and ultimately, even a means of distribution. New mobile phone network technologies and audio compression techniques make it viable to listen to streamed audio on a cell phone that’s as good as FM radio or even near-CD quality. “ (full story)

I must admit, though, I wish I could get the Simpsons theme song to be my ringtone.

You’d Never Catch an Eagle in a Theatre

Oh, how old time rockers make me laugh.
“The Eagles will begin a major-market arena tour May 8 in a city to be determined, manager Irving Azoff tells Billboard Bulletin. The act will play 40 dates through summer and 40 more next fall. “I’m working with the buildings right now, trying to get around everyone’s [basketball and hockey] schedules,” says Azoff. “The Eagles are an arena-only band now.” (full story)
