Marcy Mays working on a new Columbus venue: Ace of Cups

Over the winter, rumors started circulating about a new rock club moving into the space formerly occupied by Miani’s and Sloopy’s. Well, the rumor is inching closer to reality. Marcy Mays, co-owner of Surly Girl Saloon and singer/guitarist in Scrawl, plans to open a venue in the North Campus building called Ace of Cups. Go “Like” it on Facebook to keep tabs on how things are progressing. For now, details are minimal (hence the “Drink, Music, Food” description), but if all goes according to plan, we’ll have more to announce in the near future.

If you’re like me, the first thought upon hearing this news is: The new Little Brother’s?

  1. Very exciting news. I love the idea of KOBO, Ravari and Ace of Cups all being so close to each other.

  2. sick news!
kobo only has stupid fucking bands & ravari hasnt had a concert in 3 years :(

  3. Thats a tough spot to have a business. Just look at all the places that have come and gone at that location in the last 15 years. Good luck.

  4. I’m still excited but the more I think about, the more I wonder if Columbus really needs another 200-250-“seat” venue? We’ve got a lot of venues that can hold anywhere between 100 and 500 people (KOBO, Ravari, Rumba, The Summit, Outland, Skully’s, The Basement, Carabar, The Treehouse). What we don’t have is a venue (outside of The Basement) that is dedicated almost solely to booking touring bands like The Grog Shop does in Cleveland. Maybe that’s the niche that Marcy’s new club can fill.

    • Or just maybe it would be great to have a club that’s not a puke pit, that has decent sound, that is run by someone who knows how bands ought to be treated, and is a size that makes sense for local shows and most touring acts. You can never have too many clubs filling that “niche”…

      • Agreed. We love playing Cleveland because they’re always so hospitable to bands. Here, all you get is yelled at by the sound guy. We’ve had venues up there do anything from order pizza to have meals catered. I know that’s asking a lot of Columbus venues, but I’d settle for staff not telling people who come to our shows to “get the fuck out” at the end of the night.

  5. yawn

Clintonville needs to tear down that f*cking worthless Blockbuster p.o.s and put up a parking garage. You either have to park 6 blocks away, or leave yr car in a shitty place where the window might get popped. Fix it dickheads! Could be a real nice area, if somebody cared…

  7. Does anyone remember when it was “The Bank Heist” bar for a brief amount of time?

  8. Excited! Fuck Kobo

    • Why don’t they move the KOBO stage to the back corner? Like in front of the ladies room? Just build a wall behind it, creating a hallway to the restroom. I don’t go to bigger shows there because it gets too congested too easily and don’t play there for the same reason.

NONE OF THESE SO CALLED VENUES CAN COMPARE TO THE MIGHTY BONEYARD. THE BONEYARD CONSISTENTLY HAS BETTER SHOWS THEN ANYONE ELSE IN TOWN FOR TWO YEARS NOW. WE DON’T NEED YOUR STINKING BARS. DIY OR DIE!
