New Video by Sigur Ros

Have you seen the new video by Sigur Ros? It makes me…. uncomfortable. But I love it. Make with the clicky.

Splendid to call it quits

Bands looking for press over the past 9 years were wise to send their CDs to Splendid, an on-line music ‘zine that promised to review everything that came through the doors. As the site’s popularity increased, so did the amount of music that was sent to the home headquarters and the site has finally felt the effect of making the promise to review every CD they got.

On December 31, 2005, Splendid will close up shop. The ‘zines publisher, George Zahora, is currently weighing some options and may move forward with a new on-line ‘zine in 2006, one that WON’T review every CD that comes in. If/when that site launches, we’ll let you know.

Limited Edition Damon and Naomi DVD Available for Pre-Order

This is a recording of their last date of their tour in Japan. I booked Damon and Naomi’s Columbus show back in April and it really was one of the best shows I’ve seen this year. I can’t wait to get this DVD.

We put together a set list that reflected the group we had assembled — the band’s choice of our touring material, from the new album and otherwise; plus a song by Ghost (“Awake in a Muddle”); a song by Kurihara drawn from his remarkable solo album (“The Wind’s Twelve Quarters”); and, for the encore with Mikami Kan, an improvised medley of our song that is dedicated to him (“Ueno Station”) with a traditional Japanese “enka” tune that he recorded on one of our favorite albums of his (“Sendou Kouta”). At the end, because the crowd asked for a second encore, and because we always get a bit sentimental in Japan, we played the Galaxie 500 song “Blue Thunder.”

The DVD is limited to 400 copies and is only available on their website. Tracklisting:

1 – New York City
2 – House of Glass
3 – Turn of the Century
4 – Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley)
5 – Awake in a Muddle (Masaki Batoh)
6 – Beautiful Close Double
7 – The Robot Speaks
8 – The Wind’s Twelve Quarters (Michio Kurihara/You Ishihara)
9 – A Second Life
10 – Araçá Azul (Caetano Veloso)/ The Earth Is Blue
11 – Ueno Station/Sendou Kouta(trad.)*
12 -Blue Thunder (Galaxie 500)

Chicago is a Lollopa-winner!

Due to the immense amount of money brought in by Lollopalooza this year, as well as other rock shows on public Park District controlled grounds, the City of Chicago has suddenly warmed to the idea of more rock shows in the near future. As Jim DeRogoatis notes in today’s Chicago Sun-Times:

Revenue from the revitalized Lollapalooza in Grant Park, the Rolling Stones at Soldier Field and 20 summer concerts that drew 100,000 people to Northerly Island generated $2.2 million for Park District coffers.

This is good news for residents’ wallets, since the strategy helps forestall a tax increase. But it’s even better news for music lovers, since we may get to hear more of the sounds we love in the parks we help fund. (full story)

Hey, we ain’t complaining…no tax increase and more rock shows? Bring it on!

Beastie Boys Concert Film

Hopefully it doesn’t feature any songs off their last album.

THINKFilm has acquired world rights to the Beastie Boys concert film Awesome: I F*ckin’ Shot That, reports Variety. Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch directed the movie under his pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower. He also produced with Jon Doran.

The project was shot at an October 9 Madison Square Garden show in New York by handing out 50 cameras to audience members in the sellout crowd. The movie includes audience perspectives from 50 camera angles. (credz)

Trent Reznor Interview

Seems like there’s always one or two bands out there Trent isn’t afraid to speak his mind about. From a Rolling Stone interview:

Six years ago, you said in Rolling Stone that rock & roll “has taken a big shit.” How do you feel now?

Well, we’ve managed to put rap rock — or, sorry, new metal — back where it belongs, as a forgotten footnote. I’m a bit more optimistic now, but in the alternative-rock world I see a lot of hype over substance. I think Radiohead are great, and Arcade Fire — I saw them live and couldn’t believe how good it was. On the other hand, there’s a band like Franz Ferdinand — all the cool people say they’re good, but it sounds like I’m getting bullshitted by somebody. That’s just my take. (full interview)
