Get your glam on! Dirty Penny in Columbus (Thurs. night)

Dirty Penny returns to Slapsy Maxie’s (1019 Mediterranean Ave. – in/near The Continent) Thursday night in support of their glamtastic 2009 release, Young & Reckless. If you dug the late ’80s Sunset Strip sleaze metal sound (ala Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, Poison, LA Guns), Dirty Penny is not to be missed.

Back in October after a botched booking left the band without a venue to play in the midst of a tour with Vains of Jenna, Slapsy Maxie’s offered Dirty Penny a last-minute gig. While there wasn’t a line out the door, for a last minute show there was a decent turnout and the show was phenomenal, a true throwback to the days when I frequented long gone clubs like the Akron Agora and the “Real” Flash Gordon’s up in Cleveland.

Dirty Penny should hit the stage around 10pm. It’s 21 and over with a $5 cover charge.

Update: Dirty Penny show moved to Slapsy Maxie’s

Wow, I guess I could have seen this coming a mile away – the Vains of Jenna/Dirty Penny show scheduled for tonight at Vegas 161 was canceled late last night which left the band scrambling to find a venue to play tonight. Dirty Penny will be playing at Slapsy Maxie’s (1019 Mediterranean Ave. – in/near The Continent) at 10pm. Cover is $3.

Tuesday night: Vains of Jenna/Dirty Penny @ Vegas 161

In March ’08 I wrote about a supposed new club that had booked a few ’80s hair metal acts. The club was called The Underworld and while its web presence was non-existent, Joey Belladonna (ex-Anthrax), Every Mother’s Nightmare, and Broken Toys (ex-Dangerous Toys) all listed dates at the club on their respective MySpace pages. None of those shows happened.

Here we are, a year-and-a-half later and the double bill of Vains of Jenna and Dirty Penny shows a date at the mysteriously-named Vegas 161 for this coming Tuesday night, October 20. This would make me believe it’s the Underworld bar with a new name. Located in a former Don Pablo’s restaurant, Vegas 161 can be found at 1777 Dublin-Granville Rd (out towards Cleveland Ave.)

If this show really happens, it’ll have to be one of the most poorly promoted shows to come to Columbus (which says a lot considering I don’t ever remember seeing a Carabar schedule anywhere) in years.

Vains of Jenna and Dirty Penny both have just released sophomore CDs and have toned down the glam (big hair, makeup, leather) look for something a little more ’90 Sunset Strip sleaze metal (ala Guns N’ Roses). Here are videos from both. Continue reading
