UPDATED: The Decemberists Return to SXSW!

SXSW was the first time I saw The Decemberists many years ago…. Right around when The Tain came out… I saw them twice, and I still remember both sets.. And I’ve been in love ever since.

NPR Music will present a South by Southwest showcase headlined by The Decemberists at Stubbs on Wednesday, March 18, kicking off the opening night of this year’s SXSW Music and Media Conference in Austin, TX. The concert will mark the Portland-based band’s first live performance of its forthcoming album The Hazards of Love, which The Decemberists will debut in its entirety. Additional bands in the lineup, and NPR Music’s complete schedule of events at SXSW 2009, are to be announced.

Update:: Additional artists on the Wednesday, March 18, 2009 show at Stubb’s include Avett Brothers, Heartless Bastards, Ladyhawke and Janelle Monae.

Bishop Allen: Dimmer + The Ancient Commonsense of Things

I caught Bishop Allen live for the first time a few weeks ago at Skully’s. Up until then I had let the band slip under my radar. They were great live and the new material sounded really good. I can’t wait to hear the whole record.

The new album, Grr…, is out March 10. You can pre-order it here. Download two new songs from the record:

1/31/09 SXSW Update: Glasvegas, Official Parties, more

Here’s some new things posted to SCHED.ORG:

  • Looks like Glasvegas will be at SXSW. I know this is going to excite many people. As for me, I’ve made it a personal choice to never intentionally listen to this band.
  • Check out details of the 2009 Bay Area Takeover. Definitely one of the best regional events put on every year.
  • Don’t forget: SXSW puts on some official day shows of their own.

1/28 SXSW Updates: Rachael Ray Returns w/ Hold Steady + More

Last year we were shocked that Rachael Ray was doing a show at SXSW. Then we were more shocked when we saw it was a solid line-up that featured The Raveonettes, among other bands.

Well, word has come out that Rachael is coming back to SXSW in 2009. According to MTV.com, The Hold Steady are going to be playing it, which is the first time we’ve seen the band attached to the festival this year.

Other SXSW items posted to SCHED.ORG:

  • Set times and full details for the official Suicide Squeeze Records showcase have been discovered
  • Misra Records showcase info here.

Donewaiting.com + SCHED.ORG = SXSW Love Child

People who have been following the donewaiting.com SXSW coverage over the years know that I usually partner with another site for content. In the past it’s been with Yaris and their FreeYrRadio product. This year, I am happy to say that I’m working with SCHED.ORG.

Last year they released one of the most simple and effective tools to schedule what bands and events you wanted to see at SXSW. It was a pure web app without any blog. This year we are marrying the content of the donewaiting.com SXSW blog with the utility of the SCHED app for one monster of a site. Check out the blog here and let me know what you think.

I’ll still be posting links to what we do on the SCHED blog over here, just be sure to add them to your bookmark list too. SXSW is getting close, people…. I am getting super excited.

Vivian Girls at SXSW 2009?

According to The Golden Triangle’s MySpace page, there is a Mexican Summer showcase on 3/19 @ Club 1808 with Soft Pack, Crystal Stilts, Crystal Antlers, Vivian Girls, Golden Triangle.

Cool SXSW Music Info Mashup

Click here to check out a great mashup of SXSW information, pulling in data from Last.fm and Youtube. Created by Paul Lamere.

I decided to deal with this problem directly – I just needed to add some context to this list – some photos, a little bio, some social tags, links to music and videos. If I had all that I could more easily pick the bands that I wanted to see. And so that’s what I did. Using Last.fm’s and Youtube’s web services, I’ve created my own version of the SXSW Artist catalog that fills in all of the missing context. With the catalog, I can browse the artists alphabetically, by popularity and by tag. (continued)

Devo at SXSW 2009

Looks like the big names at this year’s SXSW are starting to roll out.

On Friday, March 20, performing right society BMI will partner with SXSW to present new wave progenitors Devo at Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St). The show marks the climax of BMI’s focused presence at SXSW 2009: Throughout the week, the organization will also stage indie rock showcases, orchestrate film and songwriter panels, and host its annual invitation-only mixers, the details of which will be announced soon.
