Comfest in Progress
It’s hard to explain Comfest to someone not living in Columbus Ohio. A three day, all volunteer festival (the largest in the country, they say). Several stages of live music, all by Columbus bands. All free. It’s a great time to get turned onto new bands that have slipped by you. I love it.
Lots of hippies, lots of topless girls, tons of food. And the Fishboat.

Shout Out Louds + Essex Green = Pogues?!
I love The Essex Green. I also love Shout Out Louds. In fact, I love the Pogues.
But I never thought to myself, “Man, dude, if the Shout Out Louds and The Essex Green got together and did a Pogues cover, it’d be SWEET.”
Nonetheless, such a thing exists! And it is indeed sweet. It’s a song off the recently released “Tonight I Have To Leave It” single, which can be purchased here.
The band’s next proper full length album comes out in September on Merge Records.

John Roderick’s Bonnaroo Blog
John Roderick of The Long Winters kept a blog about Bonnaroo on MSNBC.
Highlights….
On Tool:
“Tool delivered the sort of spine-tingling music that is meant to herald the coldest of apocalypses, the worst nuclear winter after Skynet decides to kill all humans, and it was comforting.”
On The Hold Steady:
“These fellows have a rabid popularity that leaves me deeply conflicted. Although their live show is undeniably full of energy, full of engagement, and full of whimsy, their music is full of s–t.”
On The Black Keys:
“The first time I saw the Black Keys, at the Sasquatch Festival a couple of years ago, I remarked that they sounded like the Jimi Hendrix Experience without Jimi Hendrix, which I meant as an insult. Today I realized that they are more like Cream without Eric Clapton, which I mean as a compliment.”
On Lily Allen:
“I started to feel a little self-conscious about the size of my “willie,” so I got the heck out fo there right about the time they fired up a Specials cover.”
John… I know you’re a busy dude and all, but man if you ran a yearly music blog it’d be in my first ten go-to websites every day. Just sayin’.

Columbus, This Is Your Weekend (6/14-17 / 2007)
THURSDAY
— Second Thursday of the month is always a delightful time for our monthly donewaiting.com Happy Hour at the Surly Girl Saloon. 7-10pm, me and Slaybaugh DJ and play all sorts of stuff. I have new (old) Monkees vinyl and it will be played, oh yes.
— Tortoise kick off their U.S tour at the Wexner Center, a sort of warm-up show for their Bonnaroo performance.
MP3: Seneca by Tortoise
— Down the road on High Streeet, Melt Banana is at Little Brother’s. This is the last amazing show at the club (as we know it) before it shuts down.

FRIDAY
I just go the Grave Blankets 7″ in the mail and they definitely bring the rock. Expect a proper review later this month.
SATURDAY
The National returns to Columbus, this time playing The Basement. Now, I don’t have beef with the venue, but I’m not totally convinced that’s the best place for this show. Case in point: as of today, tickets were still available. Granted, I know that some bands don’t sell out in Columbus like they do in other cities, but this band has a great wave of buzz around them, and people still don’t know about the show. I think in another venue (Wexner? Skullys?), the word would have gotten out better. Needless to say, I’m selfishly happy about it because it’s less crowd to get in the way. It’ll probably have a great walk-up crowd, so all of this will be moot.
I saw The National at Pitchfork Festival last year and was really impressed. Can’t wait to hear the new album translated live.

Unpopular opinions you have about music
This discussion in our message board has turned out to be one of the more interesting ones we’ve had lately… a sort of public group therapy of secret opinions about music.

Digital Music Updates
There’s a few new interesting developments this week in digital music downloads.
First up is the new Touch and Go Digital Store. The label is selling it’s entire catalog as DRM-free 256k MP3’s. Even Shellac????? Well, they get a special treatment for their new album. You can buy the album as 24-bit WAV files. I imagine the file size is huge. (Speaking of Shellac…)
The other big announcement in digital land is lala‘s new service. The website allows you to stream tons of songs for free (unlike Napster or Real Rhapsody). Paid downloads will not have any DRM restrictions but they’ll be imported directly into a user’s iPod or mp3 player, with the assumption that it will be harder for people to share/pirate. This, of course, is silly, considering there’s tons of programs that let you rip songs from your iPod. Still, it’s good to see the major labels testing the water with unrestricted mp3 downloads. More details here.
