Letter to the New Leona Naess Album

My friend Steve has written a letter to the mysterious Leonna Naess album that has yet to come out, and he’d like to share it with you:

—–

Dear new Leona Naess album that’s never gonna come out:

Well, it’s been another year or two of waiting and I just wanted to drop a line to remind you how much you suck because you haven’t come out yet. I’ll stop by your mom Leona’s website now and then and read her blog about how she’s recording and re-recording and recording again in LA and NY and London and everywhere, but that sure doesn’t help. Not at all. Compared to you, Liz Phair albums are like the TV Guide with the frequency they come out. Boy, it sure hasn’t been any fun waiting for you these past few years, when I think of all the things I’ve done without you to listen to. I think I hate you.

Bye for now! Won’t see you soon!

— Steve

Moviola – Dead Knowledge

In the interest of absolute disclosure, one of the dudes from Moviola is my day job boss. Which sort of puts me in a unique position for writing up any sort of review of the album.

Instead, I’ll let the music speak for itself. Stream the whole album here.

They’ve lined up a great album release show Saturday night at Used Kids. More details here.

Soko – I’ll Kill Her

The studio version of the song, available on her MySpace page, is good, but this live version is great. I love the private feel of the whole recording.

Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party

You can stream the entire album by Satellite Party, Perry Farrell’s new musical project, over on their MySpace page. I’ve been listening to it this morning, and while it’s not the worst thing out there, I don’t see myself illegally downloading buying it anytime soon.

I understand the creative urge to keep producing new product, but like Harrison Ford’s film career, I feel like each project Perry does tarnishes his earlier work which was nothing short of amazing.

The new album is out tomorrow.

The White Stripes “Icky Thump” Video

Yeah, this is gonna be on every blog, but I don’t care. This is one of the few bands I feel have a near perfect discography, with every album growing their sound palette, expanding the world of music they’ve created.

Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble

flash.jpg

You may know the man behind Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble as Chris Funk from The Decemberists. After moving into a new home in Portland, he started playing random song with some of his neighbors. The result is a really fun mixture of covers (that will make you smille once you figure them out) and original recordings. I’m really looking forward to playing some of this at my next DJ night.

Photos: Bright Eyes and Gillian Welch in Columbus

This was my third time seeing Bright Eyes, and ultimately the tie-breaking vote. The first time I saw him live, the show was really bad. This was several years ago, and since then I’ve learned that the problem was more or less 50% the management of the club and 50% how Conor reacted to it.

The second time I saw Bright Eyes was during the Vote for Change tour in Cleveland with R.E.M. and Springsteen. This show, they were great. So last night was my make-or-break situation as to whether I’d ever want to see the band live again.

I’m happy to report that I loved the show. This time out, Bright Eyes was a 10+ person band, completely with string section and two drumkits. While the set list leaned heavily towards the new work, I didn’t mind at all. Throw in an amazing set by Gillian Welch (who also performed a bunch of songs with Bright Eyes), and you have yourself one great show.

Here’s a bunch of photos, taken by our staff photographer Kim Rottmayer.
