Saturday: A Night at The Bluestone (A Queen tribute benefitting Project: Zero Hero)

Listen, I know this benefit show at The Bluestone is for a good cause – a portion of the proceeds from the concert will benefit Project: Zero Ohio, a local HIV/AIDS non-profit that strives to assure that local HIV/AIDS patients receive the medical care that they need – and I’m happy to do my part to help out, but the real draw is the amazing night of music show organizers have put together.

Headlining is Mr. Fahrenheit & The Loverboys, the Queen tribute band who will be celebrating the life of Freddie Mercury (who passed away 21 years ago) by performing all the Queen hits people know and love. But the tribute fun doesn’t end there – =Van Haken=, the city’s best (and only?) David Lee Roth-era Van Halen tribute band will be making us all forget that the real band canceled their Columbus date earlier this year.

The full schedule of events can be found after the jump – bands/set times/etc.

Tuesday @ Ace of Cups: King Khan & BBQ Show

Though Mark Sultan‘s June Columbus show was plenty entertaining, Mr. Sultan’s return on Tuesday promises even more rock ‘n roll value as he reprises his role in the King Khan & BBQ Show!  Canadian legends Sultan (aka BBQ) and King Khan have reunited to conjure another garage/punk/doowop/etc party and have set out on a late fall jaunt through the Midwest and East.   No new music is available yet, but if the above video is any indication, these two are ready to make beautiful magic together again.

Contributing to their Columbus shindig will be local openers Day Creeper and Tight Bros.  Admission is $10 at the door and here.

Friday: The Regrettes @ The Newport

Music fads come and go. How many of you are guilty of owning a Cherry Poppin’ Daddies or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy CD from the now-regrettable Big Band revival of ’97? Thanks to the success of artists ranging from Amy Winehouse to Sharon Jones & The Daptones to Adele, there’s an ongoing ’60s R&B/soul revival in full steam and, fingers crossed, unlike the Big Band revival (or the Ska revival that took place in the early ’90s), this homage will stand the test of time and not burn out as quickly as it started.

We’re lucky to have two really great-sounding soul revival acts in Columbus (if there are more, let me know) – Nick Tolford & Company are poised for national (international?) success with Tolford’s Ray Charles-like voice tapping into the hearts and souls of an audience ranging from Carabar hipsters to those who were around the first time rock n’ roll met soul. And The Regrettes, a group that hasn’t even been together a full calendar year, is taking a giant leap forward and hoping to elevate their status from “opening act for touring bands” to “big stage headliners” with the release of their well-crafted Don’t Talk Back on Friday night at The Newport Music Hall.

If you want to learn more about the history of the band, check out the feature in this month’s (614) Magazine. If how the band formed doesn’t mean a whole lot to you, here’s your chance to let The Regrettes convince you (as they have me) through their music (Listen to Don’t Talk Back in it’s entirely here). I’m sold – hook, line and sinker – on the female harmonies, foot-tapping grooves, and the Memphis horns.

Whether or not this style of music weathers the storm remains to be seen, but dig it now while you can and join The Regrettes, The DewDroppers and Washington Beach Bums Friday night at The Newport. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

Low will release Jeff Tweedy-produced record in 2013

Here’s the album trailer for The Invisible Way:

Via Sub Pop:

Sub Pop Records is excited to announce that Duluth, MN, trio Low are releasing their 10th record, The Invisible Way, on March 19, 2013 (the 18th in the UK). The record was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, engineered by Tom Schick and recorded in Wilco’s studio in Chicago, IL, during the fall of 2012. Coincidentally, the release marks Low’s 20th anniversary as a band.

“While driving through Chicago on tour, we finally stopped to visit Wilco at their studio, The Loft,” says guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk. “They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years, but this would finally be the day… What really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on – big, simple, raw and intimate. Plans were made then and there.”

The Invisible Way finds Low’s majestic melancholy in full bloom yet distinguishes itself with its starker, unadorned soundscapes, layered harmonies and drummer/vocalist extraordinaire Mimi Parker singing lead on five of the 11 songs. The album tackles large issues (“the songs are about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war war, archaeology and love,” says Sparhawk) in a manner that plays a stunning counterpoint to the sublime hush of the music.

Download Over the Rhine’s holiday album for free

It’s understandable if you haven’t surrendered to the Christmas music machine quite yet, but if you’ve been waiting for the right time to infuse your playlists with yuletide greetings, I recommend heading over to NoiseTrade where you can download Over the Rhine’s Snow Angels for free (with the option to tip the artist and/or spread the word on social media). Snow Angels is a staple in our house during the holidays (cover art by Clint Reno). While you’re at it, check out some other free Christmas music from NoiseTrade.

And, lest you forget, Donewaiting and Each Note Secure teamed up with Electraplay Studios in 2010 for A Very Ohio Christmas, featuring Ohio artists playing holiday tunes (cover art again by Reno). It’s still available for free on Bandcamp.
