Tonight in Columbus: Yeasayer @ Newport
MP3: Yeasayer – O.N.E.
Tonight marks the return of Brooklyn-based Yeasayer (and our friend Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane). It’s been over a year since their last show at Skully’s, but between a new record, constant touring of the world and television appearances, this comes as no surprise.
Odd Blood has received acclaim from multiple reviewers across the US and UK since February and supplied the demand of fans globally, including appearances at prominent festivals like Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, Reading and Latitude. Last month they also released new single “Madder Red,” which features yet another typically strange Yeasayer video. Check it out above.
Opening the show will be Georgian-based Washed Out (stage alias of Ernest Greene), whose chillwave sound has been gaining exposure over the last year. The Newport Music Hall will open its doors at 7pm.

Monday: Minus the Bear / Everest @ The Newport
Consider this a sneak preview show – both Minus the Bear and Everest have new records coming out in May (MTB’s Omni comes out May 4, Everest’s On Approach on May 11) but will be sampling from those records at the Newport on Monday night.
MP3: My Time (from Minus the Bear’s Omni) / Full album stream
Minus the Bear are an interesting creature, they’ve built a big following with their synth-driven, experimental, funky pop sound (think Mute Math meets Ben Folds, Cave In meets the Alan Parsons Project) despite various members roots in hardcore bands such as Botch and These Arms are Snakes.

The Cool Kids Are Way Better Than Jurassic 5
I used think I was funny and say that Chicago rappers The Cool Kids are the new Jurassic 5. That was meant to be completely an insult towards the idea of throwback rap.
But shit, doods persona are a lot, ahem cooler, than Charlie Tuna and all those cornball jamband nerds. They don’t sing song over Dave Mathews percussion. Plus I can fuck with the miminal post-Neptunes production and a general feeling of superiority from the reality of how Allah made some of us .
Anyway, here is a video of the Cool Kids telling you how they want to be the reason you cop a system.
They also want you to download their new mixtape Gone Fishin which involves Don Cannon somehow. You don’t get the feeling Don Cannon got involved one of those pay to play scams that mixtape dejays use to get extra money off fanbase lacking rappers that are trying to work their angles. Shit bangs. Download it here:
