Wilco Leaves Nonesuch, Starts New Label “dBpm Records” Being Distributed via Anti-

Chicago’s rock ‘n’ roll shape-shifters Wilco have formed their own label, dBpm Records, whose releases will be distributed and marketed by eclectic Silver Lake independent Anti- Records. A full announcement is expected soon.

“This is an idea we’ve discussed for years,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy said via his publicist. “We really like doing things ourselves, so having our own label feels pretty natural to me. And, to be working with Anti- — a label that was started by a punk rock guy to sell his own records — seems like a perfect fit for us.” (full story)

PS – I think I’m gonna go to Solid Sound Festival this year.

Photos/Review: Rachel Grimes, On Fillmore in Columbus

Photos by Ed Luna
Though I was very much anticipating this show, it turned out I really had no idea what I was in store for. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a set of only piano music, but Rachel Grimes (of Rachel’s) effortlessly filled the Wexner Center‘s performance space with composed, emotional, divine music. Between donewaiting, Benco and events that I accidentally end up attending, I find myself seeing more live music than ever these days. Though more often than not they are bands I enjoy hearing in my free time, I can’t help but secretly wish for the sets to pass quickly when I’m in attendance. This may be due to my busybody nature, but in the case of Saturday night, I was dreading the end of the show. Grimes proved to be a truly exquisite composer and performer live and translated a sense of calmness very well from music to audience. Continue reading

Wilco Performs “Country Disappeared” on The Takeaway Shows

The video on this recording is gorgeous.

I’m going to see Wilco Saturday in Montclair, NJ – the same theater I saw Streetfighter: The Movie.

Free “Best of Bonnaroo” compilation

Featuring live cuts from Wilco, Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, others… From the press release:

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Jack Johnson and other top artists are donating their music to encourage Americans to speak out on climate change. Organized by the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, HeadCount and the NRDC Action Fund, this collaboration marks the first time free music has been used to prompt Americans to contact their elected officials.

Best of Bonnaroo, a compilation of 17 different live performances from the festival, is available for free at www.Musicforaction.org. Before downloading the music, visitors are asked to email their Senators, the President or their local newspapers about climate change. The music is free no matter what, but the artists hope all their fans join them in taking action on this issue. Continue reading

(From Via Chicago)

I’ve seen Wilco a ton of times and this was definitely a solid offering. Loved hearing the new stuff live. Liam Finn as an opener was great, and seeing Jeff in a good mood never gets old.

I was really happy that I was able to catch Wilco one more time in Columbus while we were in town for Cupcake Camp… It’s Tuesday morning and I gotta get back on the road to Brooklyn.

PPS: Great surprise to see John (bass!) wearing an Alison Rose t-shirt.

RIP Jay Bennett

bennett

When Jay Bennett posted a comment on donewaiting.com a few months ago, I thought it was one of the coolest things ever. He’ll be missed.

Via Undertow Music:

We are profoundly saddened to report that our friend died in his sleep last night. Jay was a beautiful human being who will be missed.

Wilco (The Album) (The Stream) (The Blog Post)

Head over to Wilco’s official site to stream the new album. Release date is June 30. Pre-order on Amazon.

Do you remember when they were streaming Yankee Hotel Foxtrot while they were in label limbo on their website all those years ago? Damn that seems like it was forever-ago.

Wilco Back Catalog Vinyl (and Bennett lawsuit)

Goobye, monies.

Pre-order going on now for 180 gram vinyl releases of Summerteeth, A.M., and Being There.

All records come with a CD copy too.

Oh yeah, Jay Bennett is suing Wilco too.

Last Night: Wilco in Bloomington

I’m in Indianapolis for a conference right now but I was able to sneak away to Bloomington last night to catch Wilco. There wasn’t a lot of energy from the crowd where I was sitting, but I enjoyed the show anyway. Might not have been my favorite Wilco show, but any Wilco show ranks high overall in my life.

I picked up the Ashes of American Flags DVD, too. One thing I didn’t know was that it comes with a link to download all the songs from the film as MP3s. Nice! If you’re in Columbus, you can catch a screening of the film Saturday at the Wexner Center. (disclosure: I work there)
