RIP Larry Jon Wilson

Got the sad news today from Jerry DeCicca that Georgia-born singer and songwriter extraordinaire Larry Jon Wilson passed away. Larry Jon was probably my favorite interview subject of all time, and his self-titled Drag City debut topped my 2009 list. It was as much a joy to talk with the man on the phone as it was to listen to his music. I was looking forward to the day I could see Larry Jon Wilson in person, but his music will have to do. And do, it will. Rest in peace, Larry Jon.

Update: More details from the Tennessean.

  1. The world has lost a true treaure. LJ has been a friend of mine since 1985, when I moved from Macon, GA. to Nashville for the second time. We were neighbors, & he & Wayne Carson came to my yard sale. I’ll never forget the great times we had at the Flora-Bama, & how honored I was when he came to do my songwriter’s festival Nov. 2008 in Perry, GA. Rest In Peace my Brother.

My wife Angie and I looked forward to seeing him perform at Frank Brown every year. We will miss him. There will never be another like him. Thanks for the memories Larry Jon.

  3. Some of my best memories of Athens in the ’70’s are sitting in The Last Resort (the original) and listening to Larry Jon’s music. Several years ago while driving to Charleston I took a back road detour just to find the Sheldon Churchyard. Thank you for all the great music and RIP.

  4. I became a Big Fan of Larry Jon with his 1st album (1975?) and later on became good friends with him. We’d see each other everyday @ Old Friends Music songwriting shop in Nashville, and play, sing, talk, & drink Budweiser. Two high points for me are Larry Jons’ demo of 2 of my songs, “Lyin To You” & “Show Bidness”.
    Thanks again L J, I Love You.

I spent many a happy day and night picking and carousing with Larry Jon in both Nashville @ Don Gant’s studio and Gulf Shores at the Flora-Bama. He is a dear friend. He and Newbury are “Together Again”.
I will sorely miss the boy him until I see him again.
