Thursday: Pallbearer & Royal Thunder at Ace of Cups

Pallbearer with Royal Thunder and Before the Eyewall play their only Ohio date at Ace of Cups on Thursday, September 13. Doors are at 8pm, show at 8:30. Tickets are $8 in advance (at Ace of Cups), $10 at the door.

How many times have I reviewed an instrumental band saying, “Not bad but find it hard to write more than a few words about the ebb and flow of the music. If they had vocals, there would be something I could latch onto and at least discuss that”? Arkansas’s Pallbearer has taken the metal instrumental sound (think of a heavier, doomier Mogwai) and added what could best (best? maybe not, but the best I can do) be described as early Ozzy-like vocals more for effect than for the listener to grab onto and singalong with.

On the current tour, sponsored by Scion A/V, Pallbearer is joined by (slipping into my Bill & Ted voice) the most excellent Royal Thunder who I had the great fortunate of interviewing earlier this year prior to the show at Ace of Cups with Baroness. For my money (and I’m sure some will disagree), Royal Thunder stole the show as Mlny Parsonz led the band through an amazing set of classic hard rock/stonerish anthems that I describe to the uninitiated as early Ann Wilson (Heart) fronting Led Sabbath.

Thursday: True Widow @ The Basement (Columbus, Oh)

You know that really shitty weather we’ve been experiencing in Columbus for the last couple of months? True Widow’s self-described stonegaze is the perfect soundtrack; dark, grey, gloomy, like the rain-filled clouds that have been perpetually hanging low in the Ohio skies. That’s not to say True Widow’s latest (a friggin’ mouthful!), As High As the Highest Heavens and From the Center to the Circumference of the Earth, is shitty like the weather. No, my plodding doom metal friends, this album is far from it and is one of the most haunting beautiful slabs of noise I’ve heard this year. If you thought Hope Sandoval’s last record sounded like Mazzy Star covering Black Sabbath while stoned to the bejesus, this thing will blow yer mind (or melt it or subdue it into submission).

MP3: Skull Eyes

True Widow hits The Basement stage at 8pm on Thursday night opening for Surfer Blood and … And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.

No Scribble Jam in 2009

Earlier this week, midwest hip hop saint, Kevin Beacham sent out this email announcing the end of Scribble Jam. Scribble was a Hip Hop festival in Cincy.

Later this week I might post highlights that include me painting at Scribble, Eminem, MF Doom, Sage Francis, Meta4ce, Brand Nubian, RJD2,Def Jux,Atmosphere, Anticon, Blueprint and disparging comments about the females that the so-called “Queen City” has to offer.

BUt until then…here is what Mr. Beacham had to say.

Scribble Jam 1996-2008

First off, let me just say thank you to everyone who has been reaching out about Scribble ’09. Sorry for putting you on hold, but we had a lot of things to consider. This letter explains it all. Sorry it’s a bit long but I wanted to really try to capture the full situation. If you just want the details without the theatrics, skip to the last two paragraphs J
