Wednesday in Columbus: Alcest at Ace of Cups

YouTube Preview Image

ATTENTION METAL FRANCOPHILES! Alcest is from France. That’s where I’m going with this. Please allow me to apologize in advance, but I can’t think of a more apt term to descibe them than EPIC (anyone who uses this term IRL/unironically deserves to be hanged, drawn and quartered). It’s also very pretty. And heavy. And French.

Alcest – that is music from another world, a world that is real, but that exists beyond ours and cannot be grasped by our senses. A world where all appearances – trees, glades, streams – emit a pearly light and where a faraway and celestial music fills the air like sweet perfume. A world inhabited by infinitely benevolent and protective beings of light, communicating in a wordless ‘language’ directly from one soul to another. A world where the soul knows neither pain nor sickness nor sorrow, but is filled with a deep peace and an ineffable bliss. A world that lies ‘before’ and ‘after,’ ‘beside’ and ‘behind’ our world and the awareness of which stills mankind’s fears of death.

Mercurial Void and Brujas del Sol open.

Saturday: Slow Southern Steel – The Movie @ Ruby Tuesday

Rwake singer CT spent four years documenting the sights and sounds of Southern metal for his documentary, Slow Southern Steel. The film, featuring interviews and live performances by the likes of Kylesa, Eyehategod, Torche, Dixie Witch, Weedeater, Hank III, and Philip Anselmo, will have it’s one-and-only Ohio showing on Saturday night at Ruby Tuesday (1978 Summit St.). Based on the trailer, expect to hear lots of music that sounds like “Slayer dipped in syrup” performed by dudes with long hair, tattoos, and beards.

After the film’s conclusion, Hail!Hornet, a band featuring members of Weedeater, Buzzoven, Sourvein and Alabama Thunderpussy and special guests Zoroaster will bring the style of music featuring in the film to life.

Tickets are $10 in advance (available at the bar or on-line), $15 day of show. Doors open at 8, movie starts at 9, bands start at 11. Seating will be limited so show up early if you want a seat.

Tonight in Columbus: Priestess at Skully’s

I’m not sure what you’re up to tonight, but if you like super totally bad ass live rock shows, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t be attending this show. I saw Priestess open for High on Fire last time they came through (which was the night I called 911 for the first time in my life because some chick fell through my glass coffee table and was bleeding from her back) and 2 things real quick-they slayed my brain and their albums don’t do their live show justice.

What I’m saying is if you like cool shit you should go to this show because Priestess will rock your socks off.

The Entrance Band killed last time they were through. What else is there to do on a Wednesday night?
