Latest Donewaiting Banner Art By Johnny Ricecakes

Johnny Ricecakes is the latest artist to do a unique banner/logo treatment for Donewaiting. When I first saw it I imagined a large piece of Gumby Bacon with Pokey Patties on top of it. Translation – I loved it.

Be sure to check out his website and follow him on Twitter.

Video: Poets Read Craigslist Music Audition Posts

As part of Alina Simone‘s promotion for her new book and album, she got a bunch of poets to read some Craigslist Music Auditions. There’s a part of her book that talks about the trials and tribulations she went through early on her music career trying to find producers and other people to work with, and this video was inspired by that.

RIP Big Man Clarence Clemons

Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band whose jovial onstage manner, soul-rooted style and brotherly relationship with Springsteen made him one of rock’s most beloved sidemen, died Saturday at a hospital in Palm Beach, Fla. He was 69.

The cause was complications from a stroke, which he suffered last Sunday, said a Springsteen spokeswoman.

From the beginnings of the E Street Band in 1972, Mr. Clemons played a central part in Springsteen’s music, complementing the group’s electric guitar and driving rhythms in songs like “Born to Run” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” with muscular, melodic saxophone hooks that echoed doo-wop, soul and early rock ‘n’ roll.

Equally important to the group’s image was the sense of affection and unbreakable camaraderie between Springsteen and his sax man. (read more)

Comfest 2011 Music Schedule

Comfest has posted the 2011 Music Schedule using a difficult to read PDF tool.

I was surprised that they didn’t put Phantods on the Main Stage. Also surprised there was so many bands I don’t know.

AND JUST IN TIME FOR COMFEST: We’ve brought back the Donewaiting Friendship Farm Message Board. Don’t call it a comeback. Unless you want to.

The Antlers Call Columbus’ Cafe Bourbon St “one of the worst places ever to play”

DSC_0087.JPG

Joel has been a fan of The Antlers for a long time, and when he asked about some of their early shows playing Columbus, he struck a nerve:

Joel: I was thinking about Hospice, and how it was kind of a game-changer for you guys. I remember when it first came out. I really liked it, and I went to see you guys in the summer of ’09 here in Columbus, Ohio, at a place called Cafe Bourbon Street…
Darby Cicci: Ohhh… [whimpers, moans]

Joel: So you remember that?
Cicci: Ohhh… We played there twice.

Joel: I just saw the one.… It was completely empty.
Cicci: Yeah, both times were completely empty. Cafe Bourbon Street has long marred my thoughts of touring as being one of the worst places ever to play. Nothing against Columbus. I love Columbus. One time when we played the stage was covered in broken glass. It wasn’t dangerous or anything, but for almost a year we were still finding pieces of broken glass in our pedal boards and stuff. Somebody would ask, “Where’d these little pieces of glass come from?” Cafe Bourbon Street. (full interview)
