This weekend in Columbus: Rock on the Range 2010/Returning to the Scene of the Crime

As you may or may not know, the infamous Weakened Wrap-up was born from a meeting I had with Duffy about me covering Rock on the Range last year, so I suppose this is an anniversary of sorts or something. One thing that I do know is that I am gonna weakly wrap this up for all you loyal donewaiting readers.

Will I get drunk? Will I take pictures? Am I stoked to see Deftones, Helmet and Mastodon? The answer to all of the above is yes. Tune in nexxxt week for a Weakened Wrap-up like you’ve never seen before in your life.

Nelsonville recaps/reviews are on the way, but just wanted to share this. The “No-Fi Cabin” was one of my favorite spots to hang over the weekend, a great place to catch acts doing their thing unplugged and super-casual. This (shaky cellphone) vid of Samantha Crain should at least give you a taste of what the cabin was like.

“We Are the Same” is off Crain’s new record, You (Understood), out June 8 on Ramseur Records.

We’re less than two weeks away from the Nelsonville Music Festival, May 14-16 at Robbins Crossing on the campus of Hocking College. We’ve given the fest lots of coverage already, but if you missed it, here are a few of the big names coming to southeast Ohio: Loretta Lynn, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Swell Season, Billy Joe Shaver, Man Man, Todd Snider & Great American Taxi, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Michael Hurley… Full list and tickets here.

Initial Forecastle Festival lineup announced

The 9th annual Forecastle Festival will take place July 9th – 11th at Waterfront Park – just a few minutes walk from last year’s location at the Riverfront Belvedere – and feature experimental rock pioneers The Flaming Lips and perennial jam band favorites Widespread Panic, along with Spoon, The Drive-By Truckers, Bassnectar, Minus the Bear, The New Deal, Lucero, a reunion by Cap ‘n Jazz, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek), Dar Williams, EOTO, Break Science, Mimosa, Mucca Pazza, Company of Thieves, Savoy, BoomBox, Two Fresh, and Morning Teleportation. Over sixty more performers will be announced in the upcoming weeks, including additional headliners.

Forecastle 2010 will feature over 75 bands, DJs, and electronic artists on (4) festival stages, along with regional art installations, the Sustainable Living Roadshow, an expanded outdoor extreme sports park, Patagonia Footwear Film Pavilion, SPROUTS “Rock, Relax, and Refresh” children’s eco-info zone, renewable energy exhibits, organic food options, discussion panels, speakers, dance tents, and more.

(Louisville is ~3 hours from Columbus)

Free “Best of Bonnaroo” compilation

Featuring live cuts from Wilco, Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, others… From the press release:

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Jack Johnson and other top artists are donating their music to encourage Americans to speak out on climate change. Organized by the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, HeadCount and the NRDC Action Fund, this collaboration marks the first time free music has been used to prompt Americans to contact their elected officials.

Best of Bonnaroo, a compilation of 17 different live performances from the festival, is available for free at www.Musicforaction.org. Before downloading the music, visitors are asked to email their Senators, the President or their local newspapers about climate change. The music is free no matter what, but the artists hope all their fans join them in taking action on this issue. Continue reading →

More acts added to Nelsonville Music Festival: Swell Season, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Billy Joe Shaver

We told you back in December that Loretta Lynn will be headlining the 6th annual Nelsonville Music Festival in Nelsonville, Ohio, May 14-16. Now the fest has added some more noteworthy acts, including The Swell Season, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings (pictured above), Billy Joe Shaver and Man Man, adding to the already impressive lineup with Lynn, Todd Snider, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Southeast Engine, Michael Hurley, Detroit Cobras and Those Darlins.

Some Columbus acts added to the bill, too: Lydia Loveless, The Spikedrivers and The Alwood Sisters.
