MP3: Alwood Sisters – In The Park
While the writing process of a musician can vary from traditional to bizarre (check out this amazing website describing different methods), sometimes a little distance from your musical counterpart is all that it takes to create something beautiful.
In the mid 2000s, Columbus darlings Amy and Meagan Alwood recorded a collection of lo-fi demos in their respective homes whilst Meagan was living in NYC and Amy was in Ohio. These demos were worked on by one sister, then sent to the other, and back and forth until they decided the songs were complete.
Across The Lines, as this project is now known, will be released this evening in CD format at Rumba Cafe, where the entire Alwood Sisters band will perform the songs. The show kicks off at 10pm.
Rumba had it’s fifth anniversary weekend. Saturday night’s show featured Alwood Sisters, Bird & Flower, Moon High and Receiver!
Bird & Flower
Last week Tin Armor, City of Brass and the Alwood Sisters played a very special show at Rumba Cafe. Each band played an awesome cover another’s song and it was a super fun time. Also, Tin Armor just released a full length which you can name your price for download. Do it!
City of Brass
Live at Electraplay alums Maps & Atlases headline the Cabin Fever Festival Saturday at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio, playing alongside Ohio bands Pomegranates, Alwood Sisters, Bird and Flower, Wheels on Fire and Whale Zombie. Not too shabby for a $15 show in an old theater.
This will also be the first opportunity to get early-bird tickets to the Nelsonville Music Festival, May 13-15. $45 for the whole weekend. I will most certainly be there.
To enter to win a pair of tickets to the Cabin Fever Festival, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line CABIN FEVER by 5 p.m. Friday. We’ll choose a random winner then.
We’ve posted about Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio before, but this little video is a nicely produced, 2-minute synopsis of what Stuart’s is trying to accomplish in southeast Ohio.
Upcoming shows at Stuart’s include Todd Snider on Dec. 30 and the Cabin Fever Festival on Jan. 15th withMaps & Atlases, Pomegranates, Alwood Sisters, Whale Zombie and more.

Now the fest has added some more noteworthy acts, including The Swell Season, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings (pictured above), Billy Joe Shaver and Man Man, adding to the already impressive lineup with Lynn, Todd Snider, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Southeast Engine, Michael Hurley, Detroit Cobras and Those Darlins.
Some Columbus acts added to the bill, too: Lydia Loveless, The Spikedrivers and The Alwood Sisters.
