Who schedules outdoor festivals during the hottest part of the year? The heat was excruciating today at Grant Park where Lollapalooza 2011 kicked off. I guess if there was any sort of relief, it was that clouds blocked some of the sunlight by late afternoon but it still wasn’t much of a reprieve.
If you check out bands that you’re truly interested in seeing, chances are you won’t walk away disappointed and while I’m not a superfan of any of the bands I checked out today, I didn’t stray far from what I knew so therefore I had a great day.
Started off at high noon with Merge Records duo Wye Oak. Poor Jenn Wasner was plagued with guitar pedal problems almost from the get-go and at one point stopped midsong saying, “I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” You had to feel for her as she was playing in front of a large and eager crowd ready to get their Lollapalooza weekend started. Wasner is a completely amazing guitarist and she battled back from the problems early in the set to wow those hanging out at the Sony stage.
That previously unheard/unreleased version of “Solid Ground” will see its official release tomorrow on the iTunes-only EP Living Decorations, which will also feature a remix of “Pigeon” by Frightened Rabbit, a remix of “Living Decorations” by Friendly Ghost and a remix of “Perch Patchwork” by Josh Morrissey. Live at Electraplay alums Maps & Atlases headline the Cabin Fever Festival Saturday at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio, playing alongside Ohio bands Pomegranates, Alwood Sisters, Bird and Flower, Wheels on Fire and Whale Zombie. Not too shabby for a $15 show in an old theater.
This will also be the first opportunity to get early-bird tickets to the Nelsonville Music Festival, May 13-15. $45 for the whole weekend. I will most certainly be there.
To enter to win a pair of tickets to the Cabin Fever Festival, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line CABIN FEVER by 5 p.m. Friday. We’ll choose a random winner then.
As our friends at Electraplay put some finishing touches on sessions by Everest, DD/MM/YY, Damien Jurado, Scott Lucas & The Married Men, The Posies, La Otracina and Fort Wilson Riot, we thought we’d give you another opportunity to check out the 10 Donewaiting/Electraplay sessions that were posted in 2010. For this next Live at Electraplay session, we filmed Barsuk finger-tappers Maps & Atlases and talked to them about some songs. Columbus folks: An interesting tidbit that you’ll hear in the above clip is that “Israeli Caves” was originally written on the back patio area at Skully’s.
Here’s the full Vimeo feature with all the performances and interview segments together, and after the jump you’ll find the rest of the chopped-and-condensed, single-song YouTube versions. More bands coming very soon.
