Friday: Morning Parade opening for Anberlin @ The Newport

My posts here have been coming a little less frequently due to my work on a site that I launched in mid-August. The site, Kids Interview Bands, features my 6th grade daughter Olivia and her friend Connie interviewing bands that are passing through Columbus. The girls got their start at the Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati where they interviewed 8 bands including Neon Trees, Minus the Bear and Imagine Dragons. Since that time, they’ve knocked out 33 or so interviews and have 6 more scheduled in the next 10 days.

In September, the girls had a chance to talk with the UK’s Morning Parade, who were in town on tour with The Wombats (also interviewed by the girls), following the band’s Big Room performance at CD 102.5. Since that time, Morning Parade has done dates with Smashing Pumpkins and are now on the road with Anberlin who they’ll be opening for Friday night at The Newport.

Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are $17 in advance, $20 day of show. IAMWE is also on the bill.

Father John Misty performed at the NYC Petty Fest in October which was a star-studded event that raised $15,000 for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Other special guests at the Jameson sponsored event included Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon, Fabrizio Moretti and Albert Hammond, Jr. of the Strokes, Cyndi Lauper, SNL’s Fred Armisen and John McEnroe. As you can guess these stars covered Tom Petty songs and were very successful at raising money for a good cause as they sold-out Webster Hall.

On November 14 and 15th, the Petty Fest heads to Los Angeles for two Hurricane Sandy Relief Benefit Shows at the El Rey Theater.

Petty Fest West participants include Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, Nick Valensi and Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes, Sarah Silverman, Members of Eagles of Death Metal, Butch Walker, Matt Sorum & Ace Harper, Jesse Malin, Harper Simon, Nicole Atkins, Har Mar Superstar, Bijou Phillips, Ryan Miller of Guster, Justin Bartha, Jenny O., Rodrigo Amarante, Greg Rogove, Adam Busch, AA Bondy, Petter Ericson Stakee of Alberta Cross and many more surprise guests will cover Tom Petty songs to help those devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

A special limited edition poster of the event has been created and will be available at the shows for a $20 donation.

If you can not attend Petty Fest West but want to chip in please can donate here.

After the Jump is the full set-list from NYC’s Petty Fest.

Video: Crooked Fingers – “Sleep All Summer” (live @ the Tree Bar)

On election night, Eric Bachmann and his Crooked Fingers crew came through town to play a show at the Tree Bar with John Vanderslice. Here’s a sublime version of “Sleep All Summer” off the 2005 Merge release Dignity & Shame.

Listen: Barely Eagle

I’m loving these two tracks that Columbus band Barely Eagle debuted on Bandcamp. Featuring CD102.5’s Tom Butler, plus alums of Deerhead and Butler’s old band Church of the Red Museum, Barely Eagle announced itself with little fanfare but great anticipation this summer. These two songs deliver. “There’s Something Wrong with the Kids in this Town” drones for seven minutes but never bores, and “Guns Don’t Kill People, Barely Eagle Kills People” is an onslaught of chunky riffage. Give ’em a listen, and head to Carabar on Saturday, Nov. 17 for their free show with Temple and Bridesmaid.

Watch: Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – “Something for Nothing”

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band was one of the highlights of the inaugural Bunbury Festival held this past summer in Cincinnati. Ripping through guitar licks straight from the crossroads, the Rev’s swampy blues sound harkens back to a pre-pop music world.

Here’s the Indiana-based band’s new video, “Something for Nothing”.

The road warrior trio has dates booked through the end of the year including a Nov.23 date in Indianapolis and a Nov.24 in Cincinnati (both within driving distance of Columbus).
