The Black Keys unleash their second video off their Gold album El Camino. This video was shot at their New York release party. I wonder what will go platinum first, El Camino or Brothers?
– Petite Pierre
I know that you’ve probably retreated to one of your homes situated in a warmer client. However, if for some reason the warmer-than-usual winter has kept you and your family in Columbus, I’d like to invite you to Ace of Cups on Tuesday night to bear witness to the fuzzy, psychedelic blues sounds of the Iowa (yes, Iowa!) trio Radio Moscow. I know you’ve been seen around town taking in performers that have been influenced by you and I think … no, scratch that, I KNOW that Parker Griggs owes a great deal of gratitude to the likes of you (particularly your work with Cream), Hendrix, and Blue Cheer for inspiring his playing style.
Current Rolling Stone cover boys The Black Keys are also fans of Radio Moscow and BK’s Dan Auerbach signed the band to AliveNaturalsound in 2008 after seeing them perform. If that’s not a ringing endorsement, I don’t know what is.
So, Mr. Clapton, will I see you there on Tuesday night? The show should be over by midnight, so you can get home at a reasonable hour (at least in the world of rock n’ roll where many shows aren’t over until 2am). I bet I can get you on the guest list if you’re so inclined.

TK Webb (of Sundown) and EYE open the show. Music starts around 9pm. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
Here is an excerpt Rolling Stone posted today where the Keys basically tell lames to ‘Watch the Rock N Roll Throne…’.
Patrick Carney is pretty sure he knows what’s ailing his chosen genre these days. “Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world,” he says, blowing cigarette smoke out the window of his rented East Village loft a few days before the band heads to L.A. “So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit – therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. Fuck that! Rock & roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don’t like to see it fucking ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit. When people start lumping us into that kind of shit, it’s like, ‘Fuck you,’ honestly.”
I like Houston rap as much as the next guy. But sometimes a man enjoys Henroc out of a stryofoam cup instead of lean and sprite. Prodigy is home, and he is voting for Ron Paul like some sort of Q-Boro Vince Gallo. While I am not voting for Ron Paul this EP knocks.
I had a DJ Three tape I bought one of the first times I went to New York. MF Grimm had this great song about Emotions on it. His team had shoes made of ostrarich. The primary emotion was “fuck you”. This Lost In Translations tape reminds me of that song. More “Razerblade under the tongue” then “Hey, wait Bladerunner is kinda like living in NY.” The dystopia in the music was a product of the experience. Just because you have cancer you don’t have to tell me that radiation comes from machines. Sometimes your suffering, and alcoholism will suffice. 26.Prurient- Bermuda Drain
Until there is a PillowTalk full-lenghth this will do.
This is a really good album. I am just really mad at this album because of hearing “She Will” on the radio too many times.
I do not not hold “She Will” against Lil Wayne and it was on the Carter IV not Take Care. For some reason the idea of a sensitive artist reflecting on if a woman will jiggle her butt for him because he is famous creeps me the fuck out. Maybe it’s just makes me realize I am the only person male or female that doesn’t like strip clubs, or how women don’t mind combining money and sex. I bet whomever bought the most Steel Reserve at Occupy Wall Street was a polyamorous crust punk.
“She Will” is not on Take Care, which is a good album. I also like the Carter IV.
Envelope and Jacoti Sommes set-out to make a stripped-down, raw Hip Hop record inspired by early Wu-Tang’s zig-zag offness and analog warmness. Envelope’s skillset, and taste accidently caused This Could Go Either Way be sorta like if Heems worked with Clams Casino. Plus he is the only rapper from Columbus that was reviewed by Doug Mosurock or would even care to be.
Common linking up with Obama and getting defended by Jon Stewart, and N.O. ID being Kanye’s Mentor gave the Chicago pair the freedom to reunite and make a strong Hip Hop album.
Danny Brown said “fuck it I am about to hit 30. I can rock a grime accent and flow that will get me drugs and laid at the party then stop and bring it to some straight Detroit copper-stripping working class crime shit.”
What..if you frequented this blog then you had to see this coming?! Fear at Saturday Night Live. The Marshall Mathers LP. Waka Flocka Flame. Crass Banned From Roxburry.
Two thousand and eleven has been an odd year for me, and I think for music as well. Between acclimating to a completely different environment and being fully immersed in the music world, I foresaw a serious evolution and transformation of my music tastes prior to compiling my “Best of” lists. After the completion of said lists, it seems that not much has actually changed – not only in the last year, but the last five, when observing which names were included.
To be honest, it was quite difficult to decide on 10 full albums I really enjoyed listening to from start to finish. This could be the fault of BBC6 radio, and it’s persistent nature of turning an “OK” song into a real banger after playing it enough. It could also be the fault of so many let downs and gimmicks. Never in a single year have I looked forward to so many albums that panned out to be so disappointingly average. In a market so over saturated by bands trying to “out-cool” one another and being more conscious of what they wear than how well they play, it’s no wonder that some of names keep recurring year after year or that the best single tracks list was so much more enjoyable to assemble.
But this is it, I’ve done it. I’ve decided what 10 albums and 20 tracks have been the most enjoyable, the least pretentious and will hopefully be a memorable depiction of 2011 – five, ten and fifty years from now.
As for ranking, I must digress to the one brutal truth of end of year lists that my good friend Wes pointed out recently. Ranking is, in fact, arbitrary and simply a tool for building suspense in pinning down one’s judgement on any particular topic. So to avoid that (as you may not know who I am nor care about/for my taste in music), I’ve decided to post my lists chronologically. My hope is for you to have a listen to anything you’re not familiar with and ideally find something to enjoy. That’s why you’re here, right?
