Interview: Jack Russell (Great White); performing at the Alrosa on Friday night as part of the America Rocks tour

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already a Great White fan or at least a fan of the ‘80s hair metal genre. And, if that’s the case, you probably already know that last year singer Jack Russell had a falling out with the other members of Great White (guitarist Mark Kendall, drummer Audie Desbrow, keyboardist Michael Lardie) and depending on who is telling the truth, either Jack fired the other members or the other members fired Jack. That stuff will all, most likely, be settled in a court of law, but the result is that there are now two versions of Great White out there. Jack, for the time being, is on the short-end and has to call his band Jack Russell’s Great White while the other guys recruited Terry Illous (XYZ) to sing on Elation which was released, under the name Great White, last month by Frontier Records.

Jack Russell’s Great White is hitting the road this summer, headlining the America Rocks tour which also features Faster Pussycat, Bulletboys, Pretty Boy Floyd and Lillian Axe. The America Rocks tour hits the Columbia Music Arena in Portsmouth on Wednesday night ($20/advance) and the Alrosa Villa in Columbus on Friday night ($28/advance).

I’m a HUGE fan of the ‘80s hair metal genre and anytime I get the chance to talk to somebody I grew up lip-synching to in front of my bedroom mirror as a teenager, it’s a thrill. Talking to Jack was no different – the 17-year-old me was pulling a Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney (“Remember when you toured with Whitesnake? Remember you played in Cleveland? I was there. It was AWESOME!”).

Here’s what Jack had to say.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood / 6.21.12 / The A&R Bar / Columbus, Ohio

A hot summer night made cool by the feelgood jams of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood – a great way to kick off the summer concert season. The size of the venue seemed a bit suspect (The Black Crowes sell out venues with a capacity 10 times what the A&R Bar holds), but in a brief conversation with CRB guitarist Neal Casal after the show, Casal said that while the Crowes can pack larger theaters, nobody wanted to assume Chris’s new band could pull in crowds anywhere near that size.

I think this tour is proving the band wrong and for those who have been lucky enough to snag tickets to sold-out shows, the band’s been delivering magical performances.

Tour dates: Rebecca Gates and the Consortium (July 28 in Columbus)

I know there are a few of you out there that remember The Spinanes – the Rebecca Gates-fronted SubPop band that released 3 albums, including the excellent Manos, in the mid ’90s.

Earlier this month, Rebecca released her first album since 2001’s solo effort, Ruby Series. The Agit Reader’s Jennifer Farmer reviewed Rebecca Gates and the Consortium’s The Float this week and says, “As a whole, the album, with all its breezy, yet hard-hitting guitar melodies and breathy vocals, feels like it’s the reflection of one big, long journey, which it truly is.”

Rebecca will be touring a bit in July and will make a stop in Columbus at Double Happiness. See dates below:

07/20/12 – Philadelphia, PA – Milkboy
07/21/12 – Brooklyn, NY – Rock Shop Brooklyn
07/22/12 – Somerville, MA – Radio Bar
07/26/12 – Washington, DC – Black Cat DC
07/27/12 – Chapel Hill, NC – Local 506
07/28/12 – Columbus, OH – Double Happiness
07/29/12 – Chicago, IL – The Hideout

Saturday: Warrant helps A.D. Farrow Co. celebrate its 100th anniversary in Sunbury

A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a full day of activities in Sunbury (about 15 minutes north of 270 on 71). The event is being presented by Nationwide Insurance and will feature a late afternoon performance by my favorite ’80s hair metal band, Warrant (“Cherry Pie”, “Heaven”, “Down Boys”, “Sometimes She Cries”, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, etc).

Live music should start around 4:30 with country-rockers Kicking Dixie getting the crowd warmed up. Warrant will go after that – not sure of the exact set time. Admission is FREE.

Thursday in Columbus: Puscifer, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hallelujah the Hills, Dope Body

Lots going on Thursday. Get out. See live music. Skip work on Friday, it’s okay, I’ll write you a “doctor’s note”.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood plays the A&R Bar (yes, you read right, the A&R Bar!!!). Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 day of show.

Hallelujah the Hills play at The Tree Bar. $6 will get you in the door and provide an intimate experience with Boston band.

Question for Donewaiting readers – When is the best time for us to post a show preview?

Typically we try to post previews for upcoming Columbus shows a day or two before show date. We feel this serves as a final reminder and if it’s a band that you already know about and/or like, you’ve heard about the show some other way before we post. However, some of you probably don’t visit Donewaiting every day or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. Maybe you only visit once a week.

On Friday, I posted a preview for the Scott Lucas and The Married Men show. The attendance for that show was abysmal (that’s a whole other post!). On Monday, somebody that I’m sure would have gone to the show emailed to ask a question about the opener. This person didn’t realize that the preview was for a show that had happened the day before and, rather, thought the preview was for a show happening THIS Sunday.

So let me ask you this, readers: When is the best time for us to post a show preview? A day or two before the show? A week before the show? As soon as we learn that a show has been booked? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section (or on Facebook).

Sunday: Scott Lucas and The Married Men at The Summit

Remember last month when hundreds of you filled The Basement to see Local H (and others of you stood outside thinking to yourself, “I should have bought tickets before this show sold out”)? Let’s see how many of you make it to The Summit on Sunday night to see Scott Lucas’s other band – Scott Lucas and The Married Men.

The seven-piece Chicago music veteran ensemble lead by the enigmatic Mr. Lucas recently released Blood Half Moon, an album that Ned Raggett of AllMusic.com says “might just be the rock record of 2012” and the band has just finished up a run of dates opening for Deer Tick.

We invited Scott Lucas and The Married Men to record a DonewaitingTV session with us at Eletraplay in the fall of 2010 and one of the songs they premiered for us was the first track off Blood Half Moon, “Lover the Lullaby”, which, at the time, didn’t have a title and was just being referred to as “Spaghetti Western”. Give a listen and you’ll hear why both song titles make sense. (Unfortunately, the video starts freaking out around the 3:30 mark)

The Summit (2210 Summit St.) open at 8pm for the Sunday night show with Drew Eberly kicking things off at 9pm. The show is 18 and over ($10 for those 21-and-over; $13 for those 18-to-21).

Win tickets to see Robert Francis perform at The Basement on Monday, June 18

Though he’s just in his mid-20s, Robert Francis sings like somebody who has lived a full life and has experienced hardships along the way. When he was in town a few years ago opening for Fanfarlo, I mentioned that he brought to mind Bad Blake (Jeff Bridge’s character from Crazy Heart) had Blake been a rock club singer rather than a broken-hearted country crooner. On Strangers in the First Place, released in May by Vanguard Records, Francis hasn’t strayed from the style of music found on his previous releases, 2007’s One by One and 2009’s Before Nightfall.

Francis will be performing at The Basement on Monday night and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky winner. You don’t need to do anything fancy, just send an email to contestdonewaiting@gmail.com. We’ll pick a winner on Sunday afternoon and notify you – if you win – via email. Good luck!

Friday: Greg Laswell @ Rumba Cafe

There’s something about passionate British artists that American songwriters just can’t seem to capture within their songs. When you hear Snow Patrol or Coldplay, you KNOW they are British bands – they just have that overly dramatic sound. Greg Laswell is from … California (!!!) … but somehow he pulls off that soundtrack-style music. It’s touchy, it’s dramatic, it’s custom-made for network TV dramas (on which Laswell’s music gets plenty of exposure).

On his fifth release, Landline, Laswell tried something a little different – he invited female singers to accompany him on fourth of the tracks. His wife, Ingrid Michaelson, appears on the title track, Sia sings on “Dragging You Around”, Sara Bareillas swaps lines with Laswell on “Come Back Down”, and Elizabeth Ziman (Elizabeth and the Catapults) – Laswell’s tour partner on his current tour – is featured on “Back to You”.

Greg Lawell and Elizabeth Ziman share the Rumba stage on Friday night. Tickets are $15.
