Video : S.P.I.R.I.T LIVE At Gallery 83

DJ Pos 2 sent me this video of S.P.I.R.I.T. bringing the Polar Records Showcase to a frenzy Saturday here in Columbus. S.P.I.R.I.T. were Columbus’s flagship group during the mid 90’s. I once saw a S.P.I.R.I.T. performance at the Newport where Rizz  commanded the stage by removing his shoe and making  it the crowd’s focal point. They were like the Leader’s of the New School of Columbus and he was the Busta Rhymes..

Watch: Martin Hugo’s OJ Simpson T-Shirt Skylab Exhibit Unauthorized Preview

YouTube Preview Image

Martin Hugo is sometimes called Martin Weedsteeler because of his output in the notorious Weedsteeler camp. He heavily influenced design in Columbus DIY. He also works a day job in the fashion world. Over the past few years Martin began collecting shirts that were sold outside the OJ Simpson Trial. He will share this collection tonight at Skylab. This collection causes the viewer to think about celebrity in America, racial and social issues as well as presents a moment of outsider design.

U-Weekly did a good story about this Exhibit . I made an unauthorized video that you can watch above.  Well, he said I could do it. But I haven’t shown it to him yet.  The audio is not perfect but it’s not terrible. Consider this Martin’s Exhibit Chopped and Screwed.

Show’s Catalog
The SkyLab Gallery is located at 57 East Gay Street, 5th Floor, Columbus, OH. Show Starts At 7 Tonight.

Tonight in Columbus: Soul Khan @ Double Happiness

Brooklyn Rapper Soul Khan will play at Double Happiness this evening in support of his latest EP, Wellstone. The video for the title track above depicts Soul Khan as a homeless War Vet. If you are starved for socially conscious Hip Hop please do not sleep on Soul Khan.

I wrote about Soul Khan’s latest in the Other Paper this week below is an except

He recently released the Wellstone EP, his fourth, which was named after the late Sen. Paul Wellstone from Minnesota. Khan said he chose the name because Wellstone “was in his time, and by today’s standards and yesterday’s standards, one of the most progressive members of Congress.”

“He always fought for his convictions,” said Khan, “and that was what the EP is about, my convictions.”
Speaking of convictions, Khan isn’t afraid to talk about his. A look at his Twitter and YouTube posts reveals that he’s spoken out against, among other things, GOP-led moves to require voter IDs at the polls.
“The incidents of prosecuted, let alone reported, voter fraud are actually statistically insignificant,” he said. “Any attempt by election officials in any way to constrain when or where someone can vote is usually done for political means and not to actually protect the integrity of voting.”
He added that he felt such moves are attempts to discourage potential Obama voters from turning out.
Khan may have inherited his interest in politics, having been raised in California by the daughter of left-leaning labor organizers. He ended up in Brooklyn, where he worked at the now-defunct underground hip-hop haven Fat Beats Records after attending Bard College in Hudson, N.Y.

Soul Khan @ Double Happiness is $8.00 at the door. Doors are @ 7 pm.

Listen: Skyzoo – “Theo vs J.J. (Dreams vs Reality)”

Skyzoo raps from the perspectives of Theo Huxtable and JJ Evans on his new mixtape.:

Skyzoo explains:

With this project, I wanted it to be a bridge between “The Great Debater” and “A Dream Deferred”. This mixtape literally picks up where “The Great Debater” left off and leads you directly into “A Dream Deferred.” The tape is split into 2 parts, Theo Huxtable and JJ Evans. The first half of the tape has me rhyming as if I were Theo, with the world from his point of view. Being well off, having to live up to a family’s expectations due to their success, etc. The second half is from JJ’s view, with the sound being slightly more aggressive and the stories built with an “in need of something” attitude. The tape is the idea of the vast contrasts of a life that my people and I dreamed of and aspired to as kids (Theo) versus a life that was more of our reality (J.J). This one is for US. Enjoy
‘Theo vs J.J.’  leads you into Skyzoo’s upcoming album, “A Dream Deferred,” out 10/02 on The Faculty/Duck Down Music.
