Donewaiting.com’s 2009 SXSW coverage brought to you by Energizer’s Energi to Go

Okay, lot’s going on. Hard to keep up. Don’t forget Showlist Austin and SCHED* for all your SXSW prep work.

Have any other things you want to discuss about SXSW? Post it up in the comments. We’re at the 1 week countdown.

Viva Voce at SXSW

MP3: Devotion by Viva Voce

Viva Voce is coming back with a new album on May 26 (mp3 above). They’re now a four piece, adding Corrina Repp and Evan Railton to the fold. To me, part of the magic of Viva Voce was that they were able to do so much with just two people. It’ll be interesting to see how the dynamics has changed now that the band size has doubled.

SXSW appearances:

Wednesday, March 18th – My Old Kentucky Blog Showcase [Radio Room – Midnight]
Thursday, March 19th – Little Radio Party [Red Eyed Fly – 4:00pm]
Friday, March 20th – Under The Radar Party [Flamingo Cantina – 1:30pm]
Saturday, March 21st – Hot Freaks Party [The Mohawk – 3:00pm]

Click here to add these events to your SCHED* calendar.

3/5/09 SXSW Updates: Hot Freaks, Filter, Energizer, More

Like previous years, donewaiting.com’s coverage of SXSW is once again being sponsored. For 2009, we’re happy to have Energizer’s Energi to Go product onboard. It’s a device you can plug into smart phones to charge them up on the go using Energizer batteries. Definitely helpful for events like SXSW. They’re also on Twitter and Facebook. I’ll be helping them give out stuff during SXSW, too. But I won’t be wearing the bunny costume! (maybe we can get Chip to do that…!)

Updates!

  • DJ Shadow has been added to the official SXSW schedule.
  • The Hot Freaks schedule has been posted. It features some of my blog friends so I definitely recommend it. (You dont get Christmas cards from blog friends, but you do get help with your Google rankings)
  • Space Camp features Busdriver, Say Hi, King Khan, more more more.
  • Filter Magazine’s threee day event has been announced.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in Columbus – March 6 (and SXSW)

jasonisbell

Show info: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit / Deer Tick perform at the Rumba Cafe on Friday, March 6. Tickets are $10 (advance) / $12 (at the door) and the show is 18 and over (under 21 pays a $2 surcharge).

(Jason is also playing SXSW)

Ex-Drive-By Trucker guitarist Jason Isbell and his band – The 400 Unit – released their self-titled album in mid-February . It’s Isbell’s second post-DBT release but the first where he’s put a name to the guys backing him up. And it’s with good reason that he gives credit where credit is due – the 400 Unit brings a consistency to Isbell’s sound, a consistency that was lacking (a bit) on his 2007 debut, Sirens of the Ditch. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that album and went so far as to call it one of 2007’s most “outstanding country-influenced rock albums” but it sounded exactly like what it was – a culmination of years worth of songs that had been brewing in Isbell’s head.

With less time to write, and more input and influence from his band, Isbell’s latest sounds like the fully realized vision of an accomplished Southern songwriter and contains some of Isbell’s strongest compositions to date (“Sunstroke,” “Good,” “No Choice in the Matter” and “The Last Song I Will Ever Write” are personal favorites).

MP3: Sunstroke

I sent Isbell some questions via his publicist a few weeks ago. Read the interview after the jump.

Blue Giant (features members of Viva Voce, The Decemberists)

MP3: Hell or High Water by Blue Giant

I remember the first time I saw an M&M ice cream sandwich at the ice cream truck and thought, “Holy crap, I never thought of putting M&Ms, cookies and ice cream together but it makes more sense than anything else I’ve ever learned in this short life.” That is sort of how I feel about Blue Giant, a new band that features Kevin and Anita Robinson from Viva Voce and Chris Funk of The Decemberists.

It’s a combo that I never thought about, but after hearing their debut EP, I’m glad they got together. The band also features Evan Railton from The Swords Project and Seth Lorinczi from Golden Bears. And if that doesn’t entice you, the EP also features an appearance by Corin Tucker. It’s available for purchase over here.

Blue Giant has one performance at SXSW listed, but I think they might be doing at least one other event. If I learn more, I’ll update this post. (be sure to add them to your SCHED*)

Cursive: New Album, SXSW Appearances

MP3: From the Hips by Cursive

Ever since I saw them in January, I’ve once again caught Cursive fever. Their set was great, and after giving their new album a listen, I’m back in. Their new album is released physically next week, but you can purchase it today at Saddle Creek for only $1! After today, the price increases a buck every day until release. (Seems like the Saddle Creek website is getting pounded right now, so have patience)

Cursive’s official SXSW show is 3/20/09 @ 1am at Radio Room. Click here to see the shows they’ll be doing while in Austin.

The band is also on Twitter.
