Wednesday @ The Basement: JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound

MP3: Everything Will Be Fine

On Wednesday night, Chicago’s JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound will return to Columbus to play the Basement. They are touring in support of Want More, their second album and first on hometown Bloodshot Records (Lydia Loveless, Justin Townes Earle, ETC.). In the sometimes crowded field of modern funk/soul bands, JCBUS manages to stand apart with their approach that meshes old school gutbucket soul with rock ‘n roll energy (a style they sometimes refer to as “post-punk soul”). While their debut tended to jump around a bit between various ideas and approaches, Want More seems focused on their own take on vintage soul storytelling and party-starting. The fact that a Wilco cover (see video above) fits seamlessly into this collection is a testament to the heart and soul they apply to their material.

While they continue to evolve with their recorded output, JCBUS has also been a live force to be reckoned with for some time (including their role in the Numero Eccentric Soul Revue that appeared at the Lincoln Theatre in 2009), as JC Brooks’ soul-shouting antics lead the show with rock solid support from the Uptown Sound rhythm section.  There is no (listed) opening band for the show Wednesday, so the band will have plenty of room to stretch out and put on a fiery soul spectacle.  Doors are at 7pm, admission is $12 at the door.

To paraphase 50 Cent, El-P’s video for “The Full Retard” is living in  this white man’s world,  hanging out with a squirrel who is trying to get a nut, Toonces the driving cat-style, before pulling the foulest thing since Cam’ron spit on that little girl in Killa Season   while referencing  Columbus anthem “Hold the Floor” by Camu Tao (RIP). Co-Co-Columbus.

Tuesday @ Woodlands: The Dead Kenny Gs

MP3: Black Truman (Harry The Hottentot)

When I first wrote about the Dead Kenny Gs here two years ago, I was still amazed that the band had released an album and was touring beyond the bars of Seattle.  They put on a great set at that show and have continued confirming their very real powers since then.  Last year they released their second album, Operation Long Leash, which expanded on the themes of fiery social consciousness from the first album while continuing the jazz-punk maelstrom.  Earlier this month they released a new EP entitled Gorelick (which you can hear some of below), the art of which references an Ohioan currently in a position of power.  After a couple of dates opening for the Primus/Gogol Bordello tour (including their stop back at the LC last week), they headed out on a week-long run of Midwest headlining club dates to support the new EP and bring the Dead Kenny Gs’ message of rambunctious anti-artificiality directly to the people.

Their tour brings the band back to Columbus (for their second show in town in 6 days) for a stop at Woodlands Tavern on Tuesday.  After seeing part of a 30 minute set from afar, I am very excited to see a full set from mere feet away. Opening is Athens’ Hellnaw, an Ohio band with a similar vibe.  Doors are at 8, cover is $8.
