Watch the trailer for Dave Grohl’s Sound City film

Dave Grohl’s directorial debut, Sound City, will premiere at Sundance this year, with a wider release in February. Here’s the 10-cent description:

The film tells the story of Sound City, the legendary Van Nuys recording story, and was inspired when Grohl purchased the Neve 8028 recording console built in 1972 from the studio (and his personal connection to Sound City began in 1991 when Nirvana recorded Nevermind there). The recording console is considered to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment and has captured such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and many other legends.

=Van Haken= “Everybody Wants Some” – live @ Kobo (10.28.11)

There were a lot of tributes going on Friday night in honor of Halloween at various clubs around town. I found myself at Kobo where Alert New London was performing at The Strokes, Speed Governor was performing as Nirvana, The Moving Parts were performing as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and members of Bicentennial Bear, Miranda Sound and Kopaz were performing as Van Haken.

In case you missed it, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone both were in attendance (Hagar holding a sign throughout Van Haken’s set that said, “Play Poundcake”) and in a surprise move, David Lee Roth invited the two to join the band for “Everybody Wants Some”. Here’s the result of the first time ever that all 3 singers shared the same stage.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind, SPIN convinced some bands to cover each track from the album for a tribute record: Newermind. You can see the full tracklist and download it for the price of your email address and a “Like” at SPIN‘s Facebook page.

As far as the most interesting part of this project, I’m in agreement with SPIN editor Steve Kandell, as told to NPR: “The most intriguing angle was getting bands like the Meat Puppets and the Vaselines, who were famously covered by Nirvana, to finally repay the favor, and with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Lithium,” respectively, Nevermind’s two best-known songs, at that.”
