WHY? kickoff U.S. tour in Cincinnati last night

Ohio’s WHY? kicked off the U.S. leg of their world tour at The Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati last night. Hot on the heels of two 2012 releases – the Sod in the Seed EP (August) and Mumps, etc. (October) – WHY? were greeted with great warmth by their hometown crowd.

Now with an added drummer and two female musicians/vocalists, the band played in horseshoe formation to a sold-out audience. WHY? performed in the Black Box Theatre of the aforementioned art center. It was a tranquil environment – a lovely place to see them play before their hometown crowd (the Wolf Brothers and multi-instrumentalist Doug McDiarmid all went to Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati).

Live Review: Action Bronson In Columbus, Ohio 10/12/12

Action Bronson played Skully’s in Columbus, Ohio last Friday.  If I was in NYC today I would most certainly peep him out at Complex Magazine’s  “Judgment Night” CMJ Showcase tonight.

Ok. let me give my little recap:  Earlier that day I went to a wedding also worked and it was my mom’s bday. So I got to the venue around midnight wanting to actually to enjoy myself for change. When I was standing out front Action Bronson and the promoter Schoolboy walked by. Bronson had his hood up and was wearing all black. He looked like a pro-boxer or someshit.

After getting in the venue, I hit up the bar. After I got my drink,  I saw Bronson already on stage pouring out Goose or Ciroc. Whatever the case;  he was breaking the crowd off with some decent Vodka. It was not well rubbing alcohol bullshit.   You can see him pouring up top. My picture is blurry. I am not a good photographer and Action Bronson is quick bastard so for someone like me to try to keep hold is NOT happening.

Video: Motel Beds – “Dumb Gold” (premiere)

YouTube Preview Image

Dayton, Ohio’s Motel Beds have been in the midst of a creative swell since the late aughts. After six releases in three years, the momentum continues. Following a headlining CMJ set this Friday, Beds will issue Dumb Gold in mid-November. The band’s eighth release is a ten-track collection of angular, idiosyncratic songs, showcasing their remarkable musicianship and appreciation for no-frills rock & roll.

Dumb Gold was engineered by Beds guitarist and sometimes-Guided By Voices engineer Darryl Robbins (see 2012’s Class Clown Spots a UFO). Along with Robbins, the group features a lineup of seasoned Gem City greats – guitarist Tommy Cooper, vocalist P.J. Paslosky, drummer Ian Kaplan, and bassist Tod Weidner. Kelley Deal has also collaborated with Motel Beds in past days.

The band headlines the No More Fake Labels Official CMJ Showcase Friday, October 19 at 11:45 at Lit Lounge. No More Fake Labels will release Dumb Gold on November 13, 2012. Ohio is fortunate to have the Motel Beds.

Thursday @ Wexner: Yo La Tengo soundtracks Sam Green documentary

Photo by Ed Dittenhoefer, Ithaca Times

Any time Yo La Tengo comes to town it’s worth noting, but this is one of those special, Wexner Center-specific shows since Ira & Georgia & James will be soundtracking the live documentary The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller while Oscar-nominated director Sam Green narrates. I’ll have a full-length story about the endeavor in this week’s Other Paper, but here’s an Ira Kaplan quote about the film that I liked but didn’t make it into print in its fullest form:

It’s inspiring. (Buckminster Fuller’s) heyday would be the 1960s. It’s such a endlessly fascinating time for me. I was very young, so I have memories of it. It’s a time of so much turmoil and so many things going so horribly wrong. The Vietnam War, rioting in the cities, political leaders being assassinated. When you think of the things that pass for problems in 2012, they just pale compared to what was going on in the ’60s. And yet it was a time of such optimism. “We can create a better world.” I feel like that’s gone, too, and that seems like a real paradox. While the better world has been created, to such an extent, we’ve lost so much of the belief that it’s possible to do it, even though the evidence is to the contrary.

Tickets are still available for both the 7 and 9pm screenings.

In other YLT news, Kaplan said the band has a new album “in the proverbial can” and is scheduled for a January release. Artwork is currently being finalized.

Blueprint drops a video for Packt Like off his album Deleted Scenes.  I usual prefer Print’s Hip Hop stuff to vs. when he sings but watching him play everything out in the studio commands respect.

You can buy Deleted Scenes on I-tunes now. Video is directed by Arris Productions.  Print wil have a free release party at Carabar this Friday in Columbus.

Video: Divine Fits cover Frank Ocean’s “Lost”

A week from today, Divine Fits return to Columbus after wowing the Ace of Cups crowd back in August. Tickets are still available for the Newport show. Not only that, but the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show, previously scheduled at the Basement that same night, has been moved to the Newport, sharing the bill with Divine Fits, Cold Cave and People’s Temple.

This live video (with better audio/video quality than most shaky YouTube vids) of Divine Fits covering Frank Ocean comes via Stereogum. While you’re at it, check out the recent “+1” feature from Pitchfork.tv, too, in which Sam Brown recounts a story from a 1991 Nirvana show:
