MP3: Scarlett Johansson & Lulu Gainsbourg – Bonnie & Clyde

MP3: Bonnie And Clyde

Well, when Jay Electronica released the tracklist for his new album a couple days ago, people were suprised to see both Serge, and Charlotte Gainsbourg listed next to other guests who include Ronald Reagan, Kanye, Diddy and Jay-z.

I guess there is another singing Gainsbourg that Mr. Electronica slept-on:

Lulu Gainsbourg is Serge’s son and Charlotte’s half brother.  Above is Lulu’s Scarlett Johanson assisted cover of his father’s song Bonnie and Clyde which will appear on Lulu’s upcoming tribute album to Serge, FROM GAINSBOURG TO LULUOther guest on this album include Rufus Wainwright, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Iggy Pop, and more.

FROM GAINSBOURG TO LULU drops October 3oth.

Tuesday: Blind Pilot at The Newport

The timing couldn’t be better for Blind Pilot. Folk-based indie rock is doing extremely well, maybe not on the radio but bands like Dawes, Mumford & Sons, Quiet Corral, and The Decemberists (just to name a few) are playing to larger and larger crowds on each tour. The last time Blind Pilot played the Newport (Feb.6, 2012), the band apparently made the show an intimate experience by hopping down into the crowd for an acoustic number while asking people to put away their cell phones and just enjoy the experience. What a refreshing change in this digital age where everybody (guilty as charged) wants to take photos and videos throughout a band’s performance.

Blind Pilot and River City Extension perform at The Newport Music Hall on Tuesday. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are $20.

The GUCCI MANE has a video for “Supercocky”. He also has a bandcamp where you can download his newest mixtape “I’m Up”    for free.

It feels weird not having remember if my datpiff handle is Dipset69 or TrapSex420 but a pleasent experience none- the- less to get Gucci Mane’s music from a bandcamp and not a mixtape website.

Columbus concert calendar: August

Just like last month, we’ll keep this thing minimalist and not clutter it with addresses, websites, start times, ticket costs, etc. Google is your friend once you find a show that interests you.

So, here are some August shows. I tried to spread the net a bit wider this month — there’s at least one show for every day in August — but obviously there are other shows happening that I’ve missed, and probably some relevant openers, too, so please do add to this list in the comments. And don’t forget the Touring Bands coming to Ohio and Hype threads in the Friendship Farm. And head to the Columbus DIY Messageboard for info on lots of DIY shows coming up.

Show Review: Milk Music – Ace of Cups 7-25-12 Columbus, Ohio

Milk Music’s
set at Ace of Cups Wednesday had the Olympia, Washington band, who has made public their love of SST Records, going further away from Black Flag and continued their journey down the Dinosaur Jr. path. They played songs from “Beyond Living” and also some new stuff. The aggressive attack of “Violence Now” is certainly a thing of the past.

Video: New Lydia Loveless song “Chris Isaak” on Sound Opinions

Last winter when I interviewed Lydia Loveless for Columbus Monthly, she was already thinking about her next album, saying, “I was thinking like a Chris Isaak-type album…. I have this plot to get [guitarist] James Wilsey. He did all the Wicked Game guitar parts. Now he just plays weird, instrumental desert music. I think that would be pretty awesome.”

Well, guitarist Todd May (Lilybandits, Mooncussers) is still in tow, but apparently Loveless still has Isaak on the brain. Here’s a new tune she and her band have been road-testing. This performance comes from a Sound Opinions session on Chicago’s WBEZ. And unlike “Steve Earle,” “Chris Isaak” isn’t a tongue-in-cheek stalker song. Give it a listen.

Check the first video from Columbus band Connections, featuring members of Times New Viking, 84 Nash and El Jesus de Magico. Directed and edited by Roly Chamber, the video was shot on location in Montevideo, Uruguay. It’s short, sweet and a little bloody.

You’ll find “Stuck Lung” on the band’s debut album, Private Airplane, due in October. If you happened to get the early jump on tickets, you can catch Connections opening a sold-out show with Divine Fits at Ace of Cups on Aug. 6
