This September 1st showcase comes on the weekend J-Rawls and Casual will release their album Respect Game or Expect Flames. Peep a radio rip of the “Respect Game or Expect Flames” title track which has a very special guest on it:

While bumping this banger, I decided to sift through some footage Path and I shot when I interviewed Rawls for the Other Paper back in May of 2011. In the below footage shot in Rawls home, J explains how he got his start in both making music, and in putting records out. It’s pretty interesting as his Hip Hop story starts in 1987 with him and friends stealing his fathers records. J. Rawls ,then, tells us how he ended up linking up with Greyhound Bus traveling Talib Kweli in 95.96 and eventually started putting his records out during the late 90’s Hip Hop boom with his group the Lone Catalysts.

MP3: Zero Star – “Maybe I’m Joking. Maybe I’m Not”

Zero Star is playing Donewaiting’s 9 Year Anniversary on February 3rd at Ace of Cups.

Tonight,  Zero is releasing the physical copies for his new album Maybe I’m Joking,Maybe I’m Not at his Buggin Out 3 Party at the Carabar.

Respected Hip Hop blog Kevin Nottingham presented Zero’s new album earlier this week.

I reviewed Maybe I’m Joking in  the Other Paper.  I obviously liked it ’cause, “Zero’s flow is complex and refined, and his content is reflective, funny and wise in a subtle way. In this and other cuts, Chozin beats have the right amount of jazz, boom-bap and experimental elements to keep things harmonic with all those bars flying around.”

Dove of De La Soul said he was “Sick of half-ass awards shows/Sick of name brand clothes/Sick of R&B bitches over bullshit tracks/Cocaine and crack Which brings sickness to blacks/” back in 1996 on Stakes Is High.

I am willing to bet he expected things to change.

Now 15 years later, imagine how sick of it he must be.

Well, J.Rawls and the Liquid Crystal Project are still sick of it and have remade Stakes is High with P.Blackk and Le For The Uncool.

MP3: Envelope “I Wanna New Satan”

MP3: Envelope “I Wanna New Satan”

On Envelope’s,  “I Wanna New Satan” one of Columbus’s most beloved rappers proclaims:

“I don’t mean symbolism 666 pentagram.
Most of your evil men aren’t even into that.
They are psychic vampires. They take without giving back.
I want to be the most symbiotic man in rap.”

I think that sums it up.
I could sit here and type out the whole song.  Or you could just listen to it.
If you want to read my review of the Envelope record scroll down to the bottom of the Other Paper’ s Local Round-Up Section.

Envelope will release his new EP, that features “I Wanna New Satan”,  This Could Go Either Way by playing at 8 Record Stores this Saturday, October 15th.
