From scouring the internets from my Ohio apartment, I have been able to determine that Nas not only performed Illmatic at this weekend’s Rock the Bells Festival in NYC but he also brought out alot of legends to do early classics with.
Above is a video of Nas rocking Back to the Grill with 3rd Bass’s MC Serch.
After the jump, watch Nas performing If I Ruled the World with Lauryn Hill, The World is Yours with Pete Rock, and Live at the BBQ with Large Professor, Akinyele and Joe Fatal.

Saturday In Columbus: PicturePlane, Gatekeeper & More at the Into the Dark Music Festival @ Double Happiness

In this week’s the Other Paper I wrote about Double Happiness, a new venue in the Brewery District owned by Yalan Papillons and her family.

Yalan booked Santo’s Party House, the Knitting Factory, Europa, and Studio B in New York before moving back to Columbus.

In that article, I discussed this venue’s capability to bring unique events to our city.
Well, tomorrow is a good example of next level ish that could happen if the support is here..

Scott Niemet’s KVLT Party is throwing a day-long ALL-Ages festival in and outdoors at Double Happiness, Saturday July 30th. Elite national electronic acts like like PicturePlane, Gatekeeper, Teengirl Fantasy, join locals like Funerals for this special event.

Tickets are 10 in advance. 15 at the Door. Starts at 5pm.
Double Happiness is located at 482 S Front St, Columbus, OH 43215-5627
For Full-line-up and more info visit, Into the Dark Fest’s Facebook Page.

Saturday in Columbus: Big Day In Music Festival

MP3: BLOW! – Attention
MP3: Dead Leaf Echo – Half-Truth

Woodlands Tavern probably isn’t the first place you’d expect to see a festival spawned by Columbus shoegaze band Love Culture, but the band’s drummer, Robert Fischer, got the idea after noticing the venue’s two-stage setup. He started talking about the idea with friends and bandmates, who all pitched in. Says Fischer: “As much as I love all of our local festivals, the lineups are almost exclusively Columbus bands. While this festival is still heavy on the locals (10 out of 15), we decided to use the opportunity to bring in some touring bands and give them a chance to play to a good crowd.”

Chances are you’re not too familiar with the touring bands, so here’s a couple mp3s, and I’ll let Fischer give a little primer in his own words, below. (Full lineup and set times after the jump, too.)

8th Annual Creative Strings Festival This Week

For the eighth year in a row, Columbus native and renowned jazz violinist Christian Howes brings the Creative Strings Festival back to town. The festival marries a week of workshops for student string players (violin, cello, viola) with daily performances throughout the city for enjoyment by a variety of audiences, including many free performances at a number of venues. The premise is to pair student musicians (both youth students and aspiring semi-pro adults) interested in jazz, rock, classical and improvisational music with established masters from around the country. The pairing doesn’t stop at the classroom- performances include the student-teacher dynamic as well, where instructors impart technical expertise and real-life gigging musician experience. A full schedule of events, including a stint at ComFest this weekend, be found here.
