Help out photographer Jay Brown

Jay Brown aka jfotoman has taken a boatload of Columbus concert photos over the years — touring bands and old-school Columbus greats like the Gibson Bros, New Bomb Turks, Greenhorn (above), Gaunt and lots more. You can see a lot of them at his Facebook page. Jay is getting ambitious with all these photos now, and he’s asking for a little help:

I’m trying to raise some funds to put together a full blown traveling gallery show of my concert photos. I have some galleries interested, but I need to come up with the framed photos. To do so, I’ve started a a project on the fund-raising site Kickstarter.

The goal is to get $5,000 by Nov. 25, and he has more than $1,000 pledged so far. Head over to his Kickstarter page to learn more and pledge.

Photos: Guided by Voices in Columbus

Words by Joel
The consensus for the Guided by Voices show in Columbus on Saturday night seems to be: Great show from the band, awesome set list, not bad sound… terrible venue environment — namely, the obnoxious security dudes. But even with security constantly harassing Cary for taking pictures (he had a photo pass) and smoking (he doesn’t smoke), he got some pretty cool shots that capture the sweaty performance. (One unexpected highlight for me: Pollard doing a pre-show version of “Teenage FBI” with the opener, Nick Mitchell. Love that song, but didn’t think I’d get to hear it on a “classic” GBV night.)

More pics, a mostly complete set list and a link to hear the show after the jump. Continue reading

Photos: Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax @ The LC

Tours sponsored by corporations aren’t bad when a) the corporation is Jagermeister and b) they feature 3 bands from 1991’s Clash of the Titans tour. There were Jager banners hanging all over the LC at the venue’s last outdoor show of the season and both the bands (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax) and the MC (comedian Jim Florentine) made sure to get in Jager plugs whenever they could. Still, it was all good – a beautiful summer-like fall night with heavy, heavy music filling the night air.

Review: Jimmy Eat World in Columbus (+ photos)

This is hard for me to admit, but I think I’ve outgrown Jimmy Eat World. The guys still make great music but the last two albums haven’t been the start-to-finish stunners that their earlier work was. I’m not sure where they got lost along the way. Maybe it was the mainstream success of “The Middle” that demonstrated to the guys that they could write a decent pop-rock song that both emo kids and sorority girls would find appealing. That’s not to say the last two CDs (2007’s Chase This Light, 2010’s Invented) don’t contain some good, “greatest hits”-type material, but the midtempo, “belong in movie trailers” songs lack the punch of earlier tracks like “Sweetness” and “Thinking, That’s All”.

Jimmy Eat World returned to Columbus this past Saturday nigh for the first time in nearly 6 years (if I’m not mistaken) for a sold-out show at the Newport with We Were Promised Jetpacks. I still find it hard to believe – and, believe me, I’ll tell anybody that’ll listen – that I saw Jimmy Eat World play Bernie’s sometime in either 1994 or 1995 on the Static Prevails tour. That wasn’t a great show, Jim Adkins kept breaking guitar strings and eventually just gave up on changing strings and retuning causing the band to cut their set short. But, for the dozen of us in attendance, it was the first, promising glimpse at this Arizona four piece that was just a few years away from bringing emo rock to the mainstream.
