Friday: Alberta Cross/Everest at The Basement
Here’s how it happened it my head …
“Hey Chip, it’s Marissa from PromoWest. Listen, we’re looking to book one of those shows that, in a few years, people will say ‘I was there!’. We’ve got an opening at The Basement on Friday, July 6. Can you think of two bands that have already paid their dues, already have a few releases under their belts, have played on BIG stages opening for well-established acts that might be a good fit?”
“Funny you should ask, Marissa. I’ve got the perfect bill for you, and they are already touring together! Alberta Cross has played at The Basement as headliners and opened for Pete Yorn at The Newport, toured with Dave Matthews and Oasis, and performed at Bonaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury, South by Southwest, and Lollapalooza. Everest, meanwhile, has performed at The Newport twice – opening for Minus the Bear and Guster, was handpicked by Neil Young to open his 2008 arena tour (along with Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie), is opening Young’s fall 2012 tour and has been featured in a Corona commercial … AND … did I mention that both bands appeared in video sessions that we did with Electraplay?”
Marissa made the conversation in my head a reality. You won’t want to miss this one.
Alberta Cross and Everest, with special guest – Columbus native – Aaron Lee Tasjan, will perform Friday, July 6 at The Basement. Tickets are $12 in advance, $16 at the door.

Photos: America Rocks (Jack Russell’s Great White, Faster Pussycat, The Bulletboys, Pretty Boy Floyd)
As most of Columbus was out of power on Friday night, the fact that the America Rocks show went off without a hitch was pretty amazing. True, most of the bands on the lineup retained only one original member, but the hits are the hits and ’80s hair metal fans were treated to hours worth of recognizable tunes.
Lillian Axe kicked things off with a heavier-than-expected set and closed with the only song of theirs I remember (“Show a Little Love”). Those looking for straight-up Metal Edge nostalgia needn’t look any further than Pretty Boy Floyd who wore teased hair and leather pants. The Bulletboys tossed a few newer songs into their Van Halen-sounding set (I asked by buddy Shawn is “Hell on My Heels” was from Van Halen I or Van Halen II!). Faster Pussycat went the glam-goth route in the mid-90s and retain that look but have gone back to the sleaze rock sound they were known for. Jack Russell’s Great White closed out the night with a bluesy, classic rock sound and a set full of recognizable hits – I’m guessing of all the bands on the tour, these guys are the most likely to stick to their group when not performing.

Bunbury Festival featured artist: Sphynx
Sphynx performs on the BudLight stage at 12:45pm on Sphynx is an Austin synth-pop-and-electronic trio that “recycles a bit of history and puts a bit of soul to their songs” and has opened for acts such as Wavves, Maps and Atlases, Holy Fuck, White Denim, Peelander-Z, and The Octopus Project.
What does "bunbury" mean? (No cheating; give it your best guess) I’m guessing it probably dates back to a time when Cincinnati was one of the the leading exporters of the pastry that we now know as the Honey Bun. The ‘Bunbury’ was probably a city wide festival that would celebrate the beginning of the holiday season during which the majority of the city’s pastries would be sold, putting food on the tables, presents under the christmas trees, and joy in the hearts of the people of Cincinnati. Just a guess though. What are 3 facts that you know about Cincinnati? I know there’s a really great festival that happens there (along with Bunbury), called Midpoint Music festival that I’ve been wanting to go to. Also, the Reds used to be called the Red Stockings back when socks were the best mascot anyone could think of. I also found out on Wikipedia that the town was originally called “Losantville,” a mash-up of four languages that translated to “the city opposite the mouth of the licking river.” My question is this; did the river lick you, or were you supposed to lick the river? And, where is the best place to lick/get licked by the river? We’ll look into that upon our arrival. |

Bunbury Music Festival happening July 13-15 in Cincinnati
We’re a mere 11 days away from the inaugural Bunbury Music Festival taking place at Sawyer’s Point in Cincinnati. The 3-day festival features over 100 bands (ranging from internationally-known headlining acts like Jane’s Addiction, Weezer and Death Cab for Cutie a 15-year-old Cincinnati singer/songwriter, Jake Kolesar, whose set will be a mix of originals and covers) as well as a number of DJs.
We’ve spent the last month interviewing many of the bands performing so that we can present to those of you going somewhat of a “festival guide” and we’re going to start publishing these features, a few each day, starting today. Next week we’ll give you our picks as to the “must see” acts at the festival and then we’ll be providing coverage from the event itself.

Sunday: OURS at Kobo
I’ve never understood why the Jimmy Gnecco-piloted band OURS doesn’t sell out arenas while peers such as Muse and Coldplay (all of whom were either directly or indirectly influenced by Jeff Buckley) are international superstars.
Though rumors continue to swirl that Gnecco is going to replace Scott Weiland in Velvet Revolver (rumors that Gnecco hasn’t totally shot down), the singer hasn’t put aside OURS and has recently announced he’ll go the PledgeMusic route for OURS’ next release – his 4th under that name; he also put out a solo, acoustic album, The Heart, in 2010 and then re-recorded it with a full-band and released that version in 2011.
OURS will be road-testing new material, and performing songs from their back catalog, Sunday night at Kobo. Tickets are $10 in advance/$12 day of show. Locals The Receiver open the show.
