MP3: Casual & J. Rawls – “Respect Game or Expect Flames” ft. Del the Funkee Homosapian (Radio Rip)

This September 1st showcase comes on the weekend J-Rawls and Casual will release their album Respect Game or Expect Flames. Peep a radio rip of the “Respect Game or Expect Flames” title track which has a very special guest on it:

MP3: Casual & J-Rawls Ft Del The Funkee Homosapian- Respect Game or Expect Flames (Hot 97 Rosenberg Radio Rip)

While bumping this banger, I decided to sift through some footage Path and I shot when I interviewed Rawls for the Other Paper back in May of 2011. In the below footage shot in Rawls home, J explains how he got his start in both making music, and in putting records out. It’s pretty interesting as his Hip Hop story starts in 1987 with him and friends stealing his fathers records. J. Rawls ,then, tells us how he ended up linking up with Greyhound Bus traveling Talib Kweli in 95.96 and eventually started putting his records out during the late 90’s Hip Hop boom with his group the Lone Catalysts.

Dolfish – “I’d Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same”

MP3: I’d Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same

As always, it’s great to see a local name on a national press release (though there’s no mention of Max’s time here in town). The first full-length release from Dolfish is entitled I’d Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same and is scheduled for release October 30th on Afternoon Records. More deets from the press release:

Dolfish is the moniker of 23-year-old Cleveland born songwriter, Max Sollisch. His debut EP, Your Love is Bummin’ Me Out was released on vinyl last December by Minneapolis based Afternoon Records (Pomegranates, John Vanderslice, The Poison Control Center) and met with great praise by taste-makers My Old Kentucky Blog, Daytrotter, and You Ain’t No Picasso, among others. Your Love is Bummin’ Me Out’s lyrical wit and lo-fi production gained comparisons to folk heroes Daniel Johnston, John Darnielle and Neil Young while it’s concise songwriting (5 songs in 8 minutes) yielded comparisons to Ohio-based rockers, Guided By Voices and Times New Viking.

For the first proper Dolfish LP, Sollisch enlisted like-minded label-mate Patrick Tape Fleming (The Poison Control Center) to produce the album in the living room of a friend’s apartment in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Recorded and mixed to 1/2″ tape in just 5 days, I’d Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same features a backing band of all Iowa musicians whom Max had only met upon arriving in Des Moines to record. Tracked live with little overdubbing, these 12 songs were rarely rehearsed more than a hand full of times by the all-Iowa, all-star backing band giving the record a spontaneity and rawness rarely achieved on a studio album.

MP3: Ezra Furman “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde”

MP3:   Ezra Furman – Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

If the face looks familiar, it’s because Ezra Furman has made a few stops through town over the last couple of years with his former backing band The Harpoons. One of these trips gave birth to the really great DonewaitingTV session, were Ezra & company did talking and playing with Wes Flexner and the Electraplay boys. It’s worth your click, promise. This time around EF is hitting Rumba Cafe in Columbus tonight (8/11) Harpoon-less, instead supporting a new solo record The Year of No Returning. The first half of that record is available as a free download, if the MP3 linked above doesn’t sate your appetite.

Ezra’s solo work doesn’t seem a vast departure from previous offerings- a jangly intersection of pop and folk, delivered by a voice that will likely forever be compared to a modern, pissed off Bob Dylan.   The comparison probably does EF a bit of a disservice, as he can whip from a plaintive croon to a frenetic howl in practically the same phrase.  I believe a more contemporary comparison would be to Dan Bejar (New Pornographers, Destroyer), as the two share more as they tend towards pop-punk than Dylan’s mumble-folk.

The live show promises to tend toward the frenzied and fun side of things, but sure to include moments of wistful bliss. Continue reading

Listen: J. Osceola – I’m Just Saying (Produced by Iyeball)

MP3: I’m Just Sayin [Prod. iyeball of Fly.Union] (mp3)

Awhile back, Columbus emcee J. Osceola  gained a little worldwide recognition for having one of his songs placed in a Vietnamese film.  The North-Side representative returns with “I’m Just Sayin”.  There is a funny lyric on here about people coming up to him and speaking Spanish.

Interview: Strand of Oaks’ Tim Showalter

MP3: Strand of Oaks – Maureen’s

Timothy Showalter’s Strand of Oaks returns to Columbus on Thursday (8/2), this time opening for The Tallest Man on Earth at the Wexner Center. Showalter is one of my favorite musicians and always a fun interview, so I had to ask him a few questions about the direction of his just-released Dark Shores. Gone are the walls of synth of Pope Killdragon, replaced instead by reverb-less vocals and John Vanderslice-approved acoustic arrangements.

You can find an abbreviated form of this interview in The Other Paper this week, but here’s the full email exchange that Tim and I had over the past couple weeks.

Was John Vanderslice someone you had in mind when you were writing these songs, and how much did his aesthetic and input influence the sound of Dark Shores?
Actually the record was started twice. I went back to my friend Ben (Vehorn)’s studio in Akron last October. I had wanted to do this giant synth follow up to Pope Killdragon, and Ben was the perfect person for that. So we recorded about half the record, and it kept growing more epic.  I hadn’t finalized lyrics yet so they we’re basically instrumentals. When the lyrics were done I quickly realized that this record was not going to be what I had initially planned. The lyrics became incredibly real to me and the fantasy element didn’t fit anymore.

Right around that time, I was in San Francisco and visited John (Vanderslice) at Tiny Telephone.  We clicked immediately and began planning the record. John was a producer in every sense of the word. I trusted his decisions and what he saw in the songs. Our goal with the record was to finally capture my singing right. There’s always been this disconnect with how I sing live and how it’s recorded. John wanted the voice to rise above everything else.
