Tonight in Columbus: Secret Cities @ Ace of Cups

YouTube Preview Image

Fargo, North Dakota-based Secret Cities will play their first show in Columbus tonight at Ace of Cups. This band made my “Favorites of 2011” list with last year’s Strange Hearts (Western Vinyl) and I’ve very much looked forward to seeing them ever since. Earlier this year, they made The Boston Phoenix’s “50 Bands 50 States” list of best new bands in America (placed right next to Columbus’s own Saintseneca).

Also on the bill are Strange Tribe and locals Room & Board. Doors are at 9.

Tuesday: Crooked Bangs, Feral Future @ Ace of Cups

You may know producer Mike McCarthy‘s name from his many collaborations with Spoon. Or maybe his work on Columbus band The Sun’s Don’t Let Your Baby Have All the Fun. McCarthy was also the one who introduced Sam Brown to Britt Daniel in Divine Fits’ embryonic stage.

This year McCarthy also launched his own label, Western Medical Records, just so he could release something from two of his favorite female-fronted, New Wave/punk bands in Austin: Crooked Bangs and Feral Future. Western Meds describes Crooked Bangs as, “Europe 1978 layered onto America 1965 and delivered to a punk scene that’s dissatisfied with 2012” and Feral Future as “heavily rooted in the traditions of anarcho-punk and riot grrrl.” Sounds about right to my ears. Plus a lot of French in Crooked Bangs. I can think of quite a few people in Columbus who will dig this.

McCarthy pressed 500 of Crooked Bangs’ self-titled LP and another 500 of Feral Future’s EP. Pick them up at tomorrow night’s Ace of Cups show, where Philadelphia’s The Eeries open. 9pm, $5.

Watch: Mount Carmel on Red Bull Soundstage

So Red Bull recently launched Soundstage, a bilateral video blog meant to assist emerging artists to a new level of notoriety based on public interaction and strategic industry recognition. Yesterday, Mount Carmel posted their session on their Facebook page… a 12+ minute video that juxtaposes their assiduous dedication to their occupation (self-started dumpster company) and their craft (blues rock) with their uncomplicated mentality on being a band.

“We had no expectations and we felt in our hearts what we were doing was important to us, at least… There are points in your life where having that helps you move along. ” – bassist Pat Reed

“You shouldn’t join a band to be successful, to be famous. You should join a band because you like playing music.” – drummer Kevin Skubak

“No matter what, I’m doing this ’til I’m 60.” – singer/guitarist Matt Reed

Watch the whole piece above, complete with yet another quality Lost Weekend cameo.

Mount Carmel’s autumn dates supporting NOLA-based Down and Warbeast to be announced soon.

MP3: Casual & J. Rawls – “Respect Game or Expect Flames” ft. Del the Funkee Homosapian (Radio Rip)

Yesterday, Columbus Hip Hop Producer J-Rawls announced The First Annual Polar Entertainment Showcase which is a free outdoor Hip Hop Showcase that features acts like S.P.I.R.I.T, P.Blackk, King Vada, Middle Child,  Fabraysha A & More at the 83 Gallery in the Short North. This September 1st showcase comes on the weekend J-Rawls and Casual will release their album Respect Game or Expect Flames. Peep a radio rip of the “Respect Game or Expect Flames” title track which has a very special guest on it:

MP3: Casual & J-Rawls Ft Del The Funkee Homosapian- Respect Game or Expect Flames (Hot 97 Rosenberg Radio Rip)

While bumping this banger, I decided to sift through some footage Path and I shot when I interviewed Rawls for the Other Paper back in May of 2011. In the below footage shot in Rawls home, J explains how he got his start in both making music, and in putting records out. It’s pretty interesting as his Hip Hop story starts in 1987 with him and friends stealing his fathers records. J. Rawls ,then, tells us how he ended up linking up with Greyhound Bus traveling Talib Kweli in 95.96 and eventually started putting his records out during the late 90’s Hip Hop boom with his group the Lone Catalysts.
