Friday: Smug Brothers @ Cafe Bourbon St.

Dayton, Ohio’s Smug Brothers travel from the near west to play Cafe Bourbon St. this Friday, April 13th (No Fear™). Though the band has seen a revolving cast of members, frontman Kyle Melton and drummer Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists) have been stalwart fixtures for a number of years now.

Smug Brothers released the Treasure Virgins EP [cassette/digital] in December 2011 on their newly launched Gas Daddy Go! imprint. The band is currently finishing work on their next full-length, On the Way to the Punchline.

Be looking for a long overdue Donewaiting feature on Brother Don Thrasher in the very near future. In the meantime:

Motel Beds & Oh Condor EP Release @ Dayton’s Southpark Tavern tonight

Motel Beds and Oh Condor release dual EPs tonight (Saturday, Feb. 25) at Southpark Tavern in Dayton. Both EPs arrive on cassette (with digital download) – two in a line of boutique releases coming to you via Gas Daddy Go! Records.

GDG! was founded by former Guided By Voices/Swearing at Motorists drummer Don Thrasher and recently revived with now-bandmate Kyle Melton of Smug Brothers. Stay tuned for a more in-depth piece on Don Thrasher and his involvement with GBV, S@M, GDG! and more – coming very soon. For now:

Motel Beds + Oh Condor – Gas Daddy Go! – Dual EP Release Show
Saturday, February 25 – 8 PM
Dayton, OH – Southpark Tavern
with Pretty & Nice (Hardly Art) + Roley Yuma

Friday at Carabar: Smug Brothers (Dayton), Sowashes, Ghost Shirt, Bicentennial Bear

MP3: Smug Brothers – Low Like Nothing
MP3: Smug Brothers – Build Your Collections

All three locals on this bill would be worth venturing out to see separately, so seeing the Kyle Sowashes, Ghost Shirt and Bicentennial Bear play a free show together at Carabar is a no-brainer (esp. if part 1 of Lost Weekend’s two-night anniversary extravaganza isn’t your thing).

Icing on the cake is Dayton’s Smug Brothers, fronted by Kyle Melton and featuring Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists) on drums. GBV fans will find plenty to like on the band’s new EP, Stock Romeo — 7 songs/15 minutes chock full of home-fi hooks. Sample for yourself above.
