Saturday @ Rumba: T.K. Webb’s Sundown returns

YouTube Preview Image

When T.K. Webb came to town, he didn’t waste time forming a band. Sundown initially consisted of Webb, Moons’ Dusty White, Moon High’s Blake Pfister and TV Eye’s Grant Driskell. Then the rhythm section was switched out for Chris Pierce (Main Street Gospel, the Urns) and Vug Arakas (TV Eye, MSG, etc.)

Once Webb and White parted musical ways, Sundown appeared to be over. For all intents and purposes, it was. But after some time off, Webb teamed back up with Pierce and Urns bassist Mike Leach (also of Struck by Lightning). After practicing for more than a month at Pierce’s house in rural Orient, Ohio, Sundown is back with a more stripped-down sound they’ll debut Saturday at Rumba Cafe as a trio; it’s Webb’s first show with a band since May. Expect songs from the Spoonful Records 12-inch Mansion Burning — including “Life’s Too Long,” currently in rotation on CD102.5 — and some new stuff, too.

Red Feathers and Psychic Wheels open.

Spoonful Records makes a triumphant return to releasing vinyl with Sundown’s Mansion Burning EP, which is good news if you were unable to snag one of the cassettes and better news if you can’t wait for Record Store Day to buy something that you can flip for mega-bucks on ebay down the road.

MP3: Sundown “Hawk” (4track demo)

MP3: Hawk (4 Track Demo)

HAWK premiered on CD102.5’s Independent Playground last night, and now we have it for web consumption.  Early 2012 has been good to Sundown in Columbus. The band of veterans and Vug played the Bands to Watch, the Donewaiting’s 9-Year Anniversary and Saturday they will perform at the Lost Weekend Records 9-Year Anniversary.

Donewaiting’s 9-year Anniversary show: Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Bill Fox, P.Blackk, Zero Star, Sundown, Detox

This here weblog has been around for almost a decade, and that’s reason to celebrate. We’ll do that by bringing three amazing bands, an emcee and a deejay to Ace of Cups on Feb. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, you should come celebrate with us:

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments are not just reuniting for this show. Ron House, Bob Petric and crew are playing their seminal 1995 Onion/American record Bait & Switch front to back. Rick Rubin would be proud. Wes Flexner also informed me that TJSA was once featured in Egotrip magazine, one of the greatest hip hop magazines of all time, which is fitting, considering our next artist…

Zero Star, via Wes – “Zero Star has proven to be one of the coldest rappers in Columbus by making classics with the late DJ Przm, the venerable Blueprint and upstarts like J. Maggz and Chozin, as well as dolo appearances on Grindtime and 107.5’s ‘In The Booth.'”

Bill Fox: We talk about Bill Fox almost as much as the Black Keys on this blog. The Cleveland troubadour who used to helm The Mice has become one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and by the time Feb. 3 rolls around, he’ll have a new album to play behind. But really, even without a new album, any Bill Fox show is a big deal and rare treat.

Sundown: It was probably only a matter of time before TK Webb put together a band here in Columbus after moving from Brooklyn (Kansas City before that). He chose the right partners: Dustin White (Moons), Blake Pfister (Moon High) and Grant Driskell (TV Eye). Don’t sleep on the band’s debut cassette EP, Mansion Burning, and keep your ear out for more stuff the band is currently recording.

DJ Detox: If you’ve been coming to this site for any period of time, or you even occasionally attend shows, you know Detox. He’s one of the most in-demand deejays in the city. He’ll spin tunes between sets.

Feel free to RSVP on Facebook.

UPDATE: P.Blackk added to the show!

Sundown (feat. TK Webb): Debut cassette EP, videos

“Sleepy Song”

We told you previously about Sundown, a new project from Kansas City-to-Brooklyn-to-Columbus psych-folkie TK Webb featuring Dustin White (Moons/George Martin of Times New Viking), Grant Driskell (TY Eye) and Blake Pfister (Moon High, TV Eye). Last weekend at Independents’ Day the band released its debut EP, Mansion Burning, on cassette. You can grab it at Lost Weekend Records or digitally.

This video for “Sleepy Song” comes from that Ind. Day set, courtesy of Scott Johnson. There’s no droning harmonica like the EP version of the tune, and it’s probably the most downtempo Sundown song (hence the name), but it’s a solid introduction to a fledgling band that’s already turning heads (for good reason). After the jump, EP album art and another live video (“Fog”):

Introducing SUNDOWN: Times New Viking’s Sounddude Dustin White Discusses TNV & His New Project With TK Webb

MP3: Sundown: Life’s Too Long
MP3: Sundown: Sleepy Song

Dustin White has had a presence in both Columbus and the National DIY picture for as long as I can recall.

We could take it back to his post-rock band Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

Or we could talk South Campus punk houses like Compton and the Legion of Doom. But someone could probably
one-up that and go prior to those turn of the millenium movements.

So let me skip ahead and just say Dusty is a talented weirdo that knows the ends and outs of most musical instruments and recordings. Makes sense that he co-produced the latest Times New Viking record Dancer Equired with TNV and also acts as their soundman on the road.

Being TNV’s sounddude is somewhat like being a white noise, dub-master.

Oh yeah, and there are these MP3’s I posted above of his new project that is fronted by revered MO-BK transplant TK Webb, Sundown.

So via the emails I caught up with Dusty right as a West Coast leg of a TNV tour ended. He discussed working with them and Sundown.

How was the Times New Viking tour?

This tour has been going great. Hit some weirdness in some places, but all in all it has gone better than the last full US tour by a good amount.

What’s your role as a live sound dude for a band like them?

My role is way different than most live sound situations because I do a lot more to the sound than just make it loud. It’s more like Martin Swope in Mission of Burma, because I’m manipulating and treating what they do on stage. Sometimes to make it sound more like the lofi records, sometimes to make the guitar hurt your ears, sometimes just to make it sound fucking cool, and sometimes I am just trying to make it loud and clear. It’s actually a creative role as opposed to the typical clinician role that most live sound is which appeals to me a lot more. I also love the challenge that is trying to get interesting results in different places with different equipment and a different set of rules every night. Continue reading
