New Bomb Turks, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, others tonight at Ace of Cups

Now that we’re all done boo-hooing over the shocking announcement that Donewaiting.com is ceasing digital production in February, let’s get to matters at hand – the Anyway Records 20th Anniversary show taking place Friday and Saturday night at Ace of Cups. We’ve covered our bases posting the lineups for these two shows but I thought I’d share this photo, a cover of the December ’93 issue (“The Final Issue?”) of The Columbus Edge, featuring two of Friday night’s performers – The New Bomb Turks and Ron House of Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments.

I don’t think there’s that much to the story behind the cover. I’m pretty sure I pitched the idea of having The New Bomb Turks sit on a mall Santa’s lap and either Tony Barnett or Jerry Dannemiller put their own twist on it – finding (renting?) a Santa suit, putting Ron House in it, and taking a photo of the Turks sitting on Ron’s lap in the Stache’s bathroom.

Anyway Records celebrates 20 years with a two-night blowout at Ace of Cups (Dec. 21 & 22)

Just in time for Christmas, Bela Koe-Krompecher issued the following note regarding Anyway Records 20th anniversary celebration:

In celebration of 20 years of debt-making Anyway will host a two nights of shows at Ace Of Cups, December 21-22. Bands playing include: The New Bomb Turks, Moviola, Kyle Sowashes, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Connections, Obnox, Necropolis (covering Gaunt), Greenhorn, Belreve, Jenny Mae, St. Lennox, Orchestraville, Winter Makes Sailors, County Pharaohs and more. Proceeds from the show will go to three charities (Peloton, Columbus Music Co-Op and NAMI Ohio). On Saturday, there will be a free kids show starting at 6 PM. Admission will be $7.

We’ll have much more information as the shows get closer, but clear your calendars now, this is one (two) not to be missed.

New band alert: Counter Intuits (Ron House & Times New Viking’s Jared Phillips)

Tuesday night at Cafe Bourbon St., Columbus friends and fans will say goodbye to Times New Viking guitarist Jared Phillips before he departs to Cleveland this weekend. Before leaving, though, Phillips partnered up with Ron House to record some songs for a new project they’re calling Counter Intuits. House said he plans to release an LP of the pair’s lo-fi recordings titled Sheets of Hits on his newly formed local label, Pyramid Scheme. Look for the release in early November.

Connections, Gamma World and Ron House will play tonight’s farewell show (9pm, $5), and House says he’s trying to convince Phillips to let him do karaoke versions of a couple Counter Intuits tunes before Connections take the stage.

Still no news, though, on a new guitarist for Psandwich, House’s other post-Great Plains/TJSA band.

Not a bad way to relive some of TJSA’s surreal, even-better-than-I-expected set from our 9th anniversary show at Ace of Cups on Friday. Thanks to the New Bomb Turks’ Jim Weber for capturing this.

Update: The reunited Slave Apartments have also been confirmed to play Austin’s Chaos in Tejas on June 2.

Zero Star Pays Homage to Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartment’s Ron House

YouTube Preview Image

Ron House is obviously a fixture in Columbus rock music.  Columbus emcee Zero Star is also impressed by Ron House’s swag. (did the phrase Ron House’s Swag make you throw up in your mouth? sorry)

Anyway, I am waiting for you tube to make an interview I did with Zero Star and DJ Pos to exist. So I figured I would share this since TOP told you to look at our site today,

Zero Star is playing Donewaiting’s 9th Anniversary along with a band Ron House is in, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments doing “Bait & Switch”  along with Bill Fox, P. Blackk & DJ Bruni, Sundown, and DJ Detox tomorrow Feb 3rd at Ace of Cups.

MP3: My Mysterious Death (Turn It Up)

The more your hear about the origin of Old Columbus bands, the more you realize how many of them formed accidentally, the result of spontaneity and serendipity. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments was one such band. On a night about 20 years ago, soon after the dissolution of Ron House’s previous band, Great Plains, a band playing Stache’s ended early.

The story could have ended right there. Everyone at the bar could have just continued to get drunk and/or gone home. Instead, though, House and Girly Machine guitarist Bob Petric hopped on stage with some friends, borrowed the idle guitars and amps and started jamming on blues riffs. “We just kind of jumped up out of sheer boredom,” Petric said when I interviewed him last year. But something clicked, and they decided to do it again. And again. (Sound familiar?)

“It was kind of a fuck-off band for a couple of years where we just got together and jammed,” House said last summer. “The Columbus scene was really taking off—like the New Bomb Turks, Gaunt. So I didn’t have to do very much, just shout and scream and people would notice us locally. The whole scene was a more brutal, punkier scene. There was enough things going on that all we had to do was just go out and play and things would happen for us.” Continue reading

Donewaiting’s 9-year Anniversary show: Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Bill Fox, P.Blackk, Zero Star, Sundown, Detox

This here weblog has been around for almost a decade, and that’s reason to celebrate. We’ll do that by bringing three amazing bands, an emcee and a deejay to Ace of Cups on Feb. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, you should come celebrate with us:

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments are not just reuniting for this show. Ron House, Bob Petric and crew are playing their seminal 1995 Onion/American record Bait & Switch front to back. Rick Rubin would be proud. Wes Flexner also informed me that TJSA was once featured in Egotrip magazine, one of the greatest hip hop magazines of all time, which is fitting, considering our next artist…

Zero Star, via Wes – “Zero Star has proven to be one of the coldest rappers in Columbus by making classics with the late DJ Przm, the venerable Blueprint and upstarts like J. Maggz and Chozin, as well as dolo appearances on Grindtime and 107.5’s ‘In The Booth.'”

Bill Fox: We talk about Bill Fox almost as much as the Black Keys on this blog. The Cleveland troubadour who used to helm The Mice has become one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and by the time Feb. 3 rolls around, he’ll have a new album to play behind. But really, even without a new album, any Bill Fox show is a big deal and rare treat.

Sundown: It was probably only a matter of time before TK Webb put together a band here in Columbus after moving from Brooklyn (Kansas City before that). He chose the right partners: Dustin White (Moons), Blake Pfister (Moon High) and Grant Driskell (TV Eye). Don’t sleep on the band’s debut cassette EP, Mansion Burning, and keep your ear out for more stuff the band is currently recording.

DJ Detox: If you’ve been coming to this site for any period of time, or you even occasionally attend shows, you know Detox. He’s one of the most in-demand deejays in the city. He’ll spin tunes between sets.

Feel free to RSVP on Facebook.

UPDATE: P.Blackk added to the show!

Remembering Jerry Wick: Interview With Bret Lewis

This interview with Bret Lewis took place prior to the Gaunt tribute show at the Summit January 1st. To read about the actual show, here is Rick Allen’s review.

I grew up on rap so my knowledge of Gaunt is from osmosis. I’m not an expert.

Yeah, but you said you grew up with Nick Shuld?

Yeah, I like that guy now. But at the time he was a year older and seemed snooty. So when he joined Gaunt, it was another reason to hate on him.

Was he with Beano?

Yeah. They were fun. When did you join Gaunt?

I was the bass player. Basically, Jeff and Eric …  Jeff Regesnburger, the drummer. Eric Barth was the bassist.  They did a European Tour in 94; say from October to December.  Then quit.

Nick and I joined in January.

What were you doing before then?

Musically or in my life? Continue reading
