Can Columbus support two new record stores?
I’d seen a new storefront at 2579 N. High St near the Hudson intersection (by Kobo), and I’d heard rumors of a new pop-up record store going in there. DeVille has now confirmed it’s a new pop-up record store from Sour Records’ Steve Louis, appropriately called “Pop-Up Records.” It seems Louis has about 50,000 records he’ll be selling on weekends for $2 apiece at the storefront he’s leasing for a year.
DeVille also mentions another store, Vinyl Frontier, opening in August at 53 E. Gay St. downtown.
Any new place to go crate-digging sounds fun at first mention, but — not to be a Debbie Downer here — how many record stores is too much? I don’t know the finances of all the record shops in town, but I do know Elizabeth’s Records made it public on its Facebook page that the store needed a lot of last-minute help in order to make the rent payment this month. I imagine other stores have experience a similar pinch.
I think it’s great that record stores in Columbus, in general, stick together and help each other out instead of vying to be the only fish in the pond. But with not one, but two new shops opening up, I have a feeling a casualty or two could result. Have we reached the “more the merrier” breaking point?

Two Cow Garage recently recorded a live session for Quiet Country Audio, debuting new song “Gerri.” Watch above, and stream the tunes from the full session:

Video: Pink Reason – “Dead End” live at MOCAD

Columbus recently welcomed Kevin DeBroux back to town, which means his band Pink Reason is back, too, rejoined with Psychedelic Horseshit’s Matt Whitehurst and Rich Johnston, plus ex-TV Ghost bassist Shawn Beckering.
Here’s a video that was just uploaded of DeBroux’s band performing one of his best songs — “Dead End,” off Pink Reason’s Cleaning the Mirror Siltbreeze release — at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit last September.
You can catch Pink Reason in Columbus at Ace of Cups on July 28 with Blues Control and Day Creeper.
Columbus concert calendar: July
Chip recently asked the age-old question: How much advance notice do readers want for rock shows? One suggestion that seemed to resonate was to give people about a week’s notice, but also to post a listing of all the shows happening in a month. So, I’m going to try that. We’ll keep it pretty minimal and not clutter this list with addresses, websites, start times, ticket costs, etc. All that should be easy enough to find once you see a show that piques your interest.
Here’s some shows going on in July. Obviously there are other shows happening that I missed, and probably some relevant openers, too, so feel free to add more shows in the comments. And don’t forget the Touring Bands coming to Ohio and Hype threads in the Friendship Farm.

Listen: Connections – “Miller’s Grove”
Here’s the good thing about Columbus music. While we’ll grieve the loss of Phantods, there are plenty of new bands in Columbus to lift our spirits. I’ve been digging WVWHite as of late. And, of course, there’s Connections, the new band with familiar faces we told you about in May: Kevin Elliott of 84 Nash on vocals, his brother Adam Elliott of Times New Viking on drums, Dave Capaldi of El Jesus de Magico on guitar, Andy Hampel of 84 Nash on guitar and Philip Kim of Andrew Graham & Swarming Branch on bass.
The Columbus supergroup didn’t disappoint when I caught their debut show at Kobo, and I was happy to hear the band is working on their debut full-length, Private Airplane, at Columbus Discount Recording. “Miller’s Grove,” above, is the first preview of Connections’ upcoming record. You can catch Connections Friday night at Ace of Cups. (And WVWhite Saturday at Ace of Cups.)
Phantods call it quits
Donewaiting has always championed Columbus band Phantods, even inviting them to play our Donew8ing anniversary show. So I’m saddened to report the band is calling it quits — or, as they put it on the Facebook status, “going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time”:
It is bittersweet to announce that July 21st will be our last show! We will be going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time, in order to explore other things in life ;) We have had so many amazing years in Phantods that have been provided by all of your support and love. The night before our last show, we will be joining Arbor Ave. Films to watch a screening of the documentary that they made about us. They followed us around for over a year, getting behind the scenes shots and live footage. We’d love it if you joined us for both nights. We’ll post more about that screening later in the week. Love you all!!
Info on that last show with Astro Fang in the photo above. Here’s to a future reunion show…
Video: Great Plains on Cablevision (Columbus, 1983) from Old 3C’s forthcoming DVD
Paul Nini’s Old 3C Records is putting out a Great Plains DVD called Directions to the Party, chock full of Great Plains performances from Comfest 1987, Stache’s in ’85, more recent reunions in Columbus and Brooklyn in ’08, and a 1983 Cablevision TV performance, which you can preview above.
Dig Tim Anstaett’s rambling intro, which is basically a two-minute history of his TKA/The Offense zine/newsletter through 1983, along with plea for 50-cent subscriptions. All the while, behind him, an early lineup of Great Plains cracks jokes and eventually just starts playing “Cave-in” over him. It’s a priceless slice of Columbus history, as is the whole DVD.
Artwork below. No firm release date yet.

Strand of Oaks give away first two albums and new song “Maureen’s”
MP3: Strand of Oaks – Maureen’s
Strand of Oaks is Timothy Showalter, and in 2010 he released my favorite album of that year, Pope Killdragon. You can now download it, along with debut Leave Ruin, for free at Strand of Oaks’ Bandcamp.
Another freebie, “Maureen’s,” is the first taste of Showalter’s coming album, Dark Shores. It’s more guitar-based than I anticipated, especially after hearing the synth-drenched Shaking Through collaboration “Spacestations,” but it’s no less affecting, and I’m eagerly anticipating the rest of the new record.
Strand of Oaks head out on tour next month with the Tallest Man on Earth, making a stop at the Wexner Center on Aug. 2. Full Oaks/Tallest Man tour dates below: Continue reading
