MP3: Ezra Furman “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde”

MP3:   Ezra Furman – Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

If the face looks familiar, it’s because Ezra Furman has made a few stops through town over the last couple of years with his former backing band The Harpoons. One of these trips gave birth to the really great DonewaitingTV session, were Ezra & company did talking and playing with Wes Flexner and the Electraplay boys. It’s worth your click, promise. This time around EF is hitting Rumba Cafe in Columbus tonight (8/11) Harpoon-less, instead supporting a new solo record The Year of No Returning. The first half of that record is available as a free download, if the MP3 linked above doesn’t sate your appetite.

Ezra’s solo work doesn’t seem a vast departure from previous offerings- a jangly intersection of pop and folk, delivered by a voice that will likely forever be compared to a modern, pissed off Bob Dylan.   The comparison probably does EF a bit of a disservice, as he can whip from a plaintive croon to a frenetic howl in practically the same phrase.  I believe a more contemporary comparison would be to Dan Bejar (New Pornographers, Destroyer), as the two share more as they tend towards pop-punk than Dylan’s mumble-folk.

The live show promises to tend toward the frenzied and fun side of things, but sure to include moments of wistful bliss. Continue reading

Jon Chinn Returns With Free 9-Song EP, Columbus Show

MP3: Break Away

Jon Chinn, he of Pretty Mighty Mighty, Workbook Studio, and all around nice dude, begins his return to the world of recorded music today with a free 9 song sampler of his upcoming album, The Tiniest Light. Recorded between 2008-2012, it includes songs recorded with his backing band 1803 as well as musicians from his current homebase of Brooklyn. The full length album includes 5 more tracks and will be released in the fall, hopefully on vinyl.

Jon Chinn and the 1803 will be playing the Treebar in Columbus on Friday, August 17. Bicentennial Bear and My Orca open.

Friday: Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys @ Kobo

Let me see if I get this right – a cover band covers many different songs by many different artists and a tribute band pays tribute by covering just one band’s songs? If that’s the case, Columbus needs less cover bands and more … WAY MORE … tribute bands. (Come on tribute bands, let’s start a rally, the Cleveland tribute band scene blows away the Columbus tribute band scene!)

Though they play shows few and far between, Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys, Columbus’s (only?) Queen tribute band, will grace the stage for the first time in a year Friday night at Kobo.

Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys will be performing with the Mrs. Children tribute band Ghost Shirt (just kidding … I think) and Chicago’s Milano (definitely NOT a Chicago tribute band, though I think I’d pay to see a band cover “25 or 6 to 4”). Doors at 8, Ghost Shirt kicking the music off at 9:30. More info here.

Listen – Skyzoo – “Jansport Strings” (One Time for Chi Ali) (Produced By 9th Wonder)

Listen: J. Osceola – I’m Just Saying (Produced by Iyeball)

MP3: I’m Just Sayin [Prod. iyeball of Fly.Union] (mp3)

Awhile back, Columbus emcee J. Osceola  gained a little worldwide recognition for having one of his songs placed in a Vietnamese film.  The North-Side representative returns with “I’m Just Sayin”.  There is a funny lyric on here about people coming up to him and speaking Spanish.
