Southeast Engine: New EP, Columbus presence, Megacity slot

Some news from one of Donewaiting’s faves, Southeast Engine. First, on July 31 the band is releasing a new EP titled Canaanville, which they describe as “a 4-song appendix EP designed to accompany Canary. Both albums are thematically based around Appalachian Ohio during The Great Depression. Canaanville is not, however, B-Sides or outtakes.” Stream “Old Oak Tree” above. You can pre-order the EP in the form of a T-shirt album (i.e. digital album + SEE T-shirt).

Also, Jesse Remnant – SEE bassist, harmony vocalist and brother to singer Adam Remnant — recently relocated to Columbus, which means he won’t have far to drive when the band headlines the White Stage at the Megacity Music Marathon June 9 at Woodlands Tavern. (SEE plays at 12:30am). Jesse also has his own project called The Human Cannonball. Hopefully this means we’ll get more Southeast Engine AND Human Cannonball shows here in Columbus.

Side note: SEE’s members now represent Athens, Dayton and Columbus. And Morgantown, W.V., but we’ll let that slide…

Watch: Divine Fits album teaser

Last week we told you about Divine Fits, a new supergroup consisting of Britt Daniel of Spoon, Sam Brown of the New Bomb Turks and Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade (and the recently defunct Handsome Furs). Now the band has posted a video with just a bit of teaser music from the coming album on Merge Records. Watch the dancing blob and give it a listen…

Friday in Columbus: Local bands

MP3: Deadwood Floats – The Colours I Earned
MP3: Sovroncourt – Butch Cassidy

Forget the Foster the People show at the LC on Friday. (And while you’re at it, forget Empire of the Sun and all the myriad knock-offs that MGMT and Passion Pit have spawned. BLAH.) If you’re dead set on catching a touring act, take a risk and check out Thrill Jockey’s Man Forever (feat. Kid Millions of Oneida) at Double Happiness.

I was going to pick a local show to preview, but they all seem worth at least a mention: Rumba has a solid triple bill with the Receiver, Way Yes and Saturday Giant; At Carabar, Nick Tolford, the Weight of Whales and Dayton’s Shut Up share a bill with Chicago’s Al Scorch; and the Tree Bar booked a folk-rock night with two relative newbies — Deadwood Floats (cover art for their “The Colours I Earned” single above) and Sovroncourt — and anchored by local chill-folk stalwarts Moon High and melodious Kafe Kerouac scenesters Audrey & Orwell. Check out the mp3s above for a taste of what the newbs have to offer. (Deadwood Floats RIYL Blind Pilot, and Sovroncourt accurately describes himself as “croak folk.”)

Use your Google and MyFace for more details on the shows. Oh, and the Columbus Arts Festival starts Friday, which also happens to be the day with the best music lineup of the fest, including Tim Easton and the Randys.

Other Friday shows you’re looking forward to? (Not sure what’s happening at Summit or Bourbon St.) Post in the comments or in the Hype section of the Friendship Farm.

Wednesday in Columbus: Goes Cube, Messrs

Messrs is Bo Davis’s new band. They’ve got a full album’s worth of material recorded at CDR, and you can stream three tunes above.

Donewaiting’s love for Goes Cube goes back to 2008 when the band played this humble blog’s SXSW day show. Other DW staffers have since professed their love for Goes Cube, as well.

It all goes down for free at Carabar on Wednesday, with Indiana’s Exotic Animal Petting Zoo rounding out the bill.

Saturday in Columbus: Old 3C Fest with Ron House, Log, Beetkeepers, Orchestraville & others

Lots going on this weekend (including Sinkane’s return), but with a stacked lineup for $5, the first ever Old 3C Fest at Ace of Cups is more than a safe bet. Here’s the order:

Happy Hour on the patio
05:00 p.m. – Ron House
05:40 p.m. – Alyosha Het
06:20 p.m. – Closet Mix

On stage
08:45 p.m. – Beetkeepers
09:40 p.m. – Randall Douglas Matson
10:20 p.m. – Stark Folk
11:15 p.m. – Chris Forbes, Keith Hanlon + Parker Paul of Orchestraville
11:55 p.m. – Log

New Band Alert: Divine Fits featuring New Bomb Turks’ Sam Brown, Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner

Look for an album from the supergroup on MERGE RECORDS later this year. Says the press release, “The album was was produced by Nick Launay. Further details regarding the record’s release date, live dates, etc. will be announced as they are confirmed.”

Till then, stay tuned to the Divine Fits home page and Twitter. We’ll have more from Mr. Brown soon, too.

Video: Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires – “How Long” (Live at Nelsonville)

YouTube Preview Image

What a weekend. We’ll have some “official” recaps coming, and a whole bunch of photos from the 2012 Nelsonville Music Festival, but for now, here’s Daptone’s Charles Bradley and band doing “How Long” during their Friday night set, my favorite of the weekend. I’ve been flipping Bradley’s No Time for Dreaming LP from side to side since the second I got home.

MP3: Guided by Voices – “Class Clown Spots a UFO”

MP3: Guided by Voices – Class Clown Spots a UFO

The Nelsonville Music Festival is now upon us, and while I’m excited to check out Kurt Vile and others tonight, Guided by Voices gets me downright giddy. In anticipation of Bob Pollard’s classic GBV lineup hitting the main stage tonight at midnight, here’s new track “Class Clown Spots a UFO” from the album of the same name, out June 12, and 7″ single out May 15. Rolling Stone premiered the track this week and gave this background on the song’s origin, which can be traced back to GBV’s early days:

The earliest version of the tune, called “Crocker’s Favorite Song,” was penned by Robert Pollard back in the late Eighties, and another version ended up on the cutting room floor when the band made their 1994 classic Bee Thousand. Alternate recordings with the newer title appeared on three different GBV compilations. When the mid-Nineties lineup of the band reunited, they revised and re-recorded the song, which now has a polish and harmonic complexity lacking in earlier renditions.

Give it a listen, and see you tonight in Nelsonville…

New band alert: Connections featuring members of Times New Viking, 84 Nash, El Jesus

That flyer is for tonight’s debut show of Connections, a new Columbus band with a noteworthy lineup: Adam Elliott of Times New Viking, Kevin Elliott of 84 Nash, Dave Capaldi of El Jesus de Magico, Philip Kim of Andrew Graham & Swarming Branch and Andy Hampel of 84 Nash. Kevin Elliott posted some Connections songs on SoundCloud awhile back, but those have been taken down because, Elliott says, “They weren’t representative of what we are doing now. Until tonight, it’s somewhat a mystery as to what we sound like.”

Not content with just one debut show, Connections will play three in a row this week:

Wednesday (5/16) @ Kobo
W/ Francis Bacon Band
Something Somethings
Smart Girls

Thursday (5/17) @ Cafe Bourbon t.
W/ Washington Beach Bums
WV White
Live comedy from “Doin’ It Wrong”

Friday (5/18) @ Double Happiness
W/ Psychedelic Horseshit
Psandwich
Jeff Fernengel (Tree of Snakes) in the lounge

You can also catch Connections at Megacity Music Marathon June 9.
