Waka Flocka Flame Goes Hard In the Paint For Animal Rights and PETA

Awhile back I interviewed Waka Flocka Flame for this here website. I told him that alot of hardcore kids I know listen to him and not much much else. When I said that, I had no idea he would be getting all Earth Crisis on us. Maybe Thought Catalog was onto something when they used veganism to describe the Atlanta rapper in a review.

Yesterday, Waka Flocka told Hip Hopdx that he would join Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Pink, and other celebrities in PETA’s “Ink Not Mink” campaign February 22nd.

Waka Flocka’s argument for animal rights? Waka said, “Animals should be treated the same as you would a kid. Would you want someone just to walk up and skin your kid? Hell no!”

While, I like the idea of Waka channeling his violent ways Animal Liberation Front style, honestly this isn’t that extreme.
Athletes likeA’mare Stoudemire, and Chad Ochocinco have posed nude to protest fur for PETA in the past.(nh)

While being a vegan myself, I am stoked one of my favorite rappers is taking stand for animal rights without having Erykah Badu putting a finger in his butthole. Something tells me Waka isn’t vegan.
But if Waka is, or decides to embrace a cruelty free diet, I suggest eating at Soul Veg in Atlanta after a long day of bustin at em, and going hard in the paint. Things could get really interesting from there.

Odd Future to play Jimmy Fallon 2/16. Tour Dates and Coachella

UPDATE: Watch the video here of the performance

According to the LA Times, L.A. rap malcontents, Odd Future are currently in the middle of label bidding wars. So what’s a better way to raise the stakes then play some key markets, hop on National TV with the Roots, and rock Coachella?

Who is Odd Future?
High School kids that can actually skate, and can actually rap who are also very anti-social towards the current hypebeast blog rapper.
Throw a little Wu, shock value and Dada in with the Cool Kids to make them not Jurassic 5. Or throw a lot Sean Price in with Das Racist. Or listen to rap and skateboard and don’t be a fucking poser. Insert the real title for License to Ill instead of poser. Or don’t.

That description too vague?

The Black Keys Certified Gold in the United States of America.

Earlier this week, Billboard Magazine did a feature on the Black Keys. They stated at press time the Keys were at 481,000 sold. Well, it looks like the Black Keys hit the Gold mark in the USA for 500,000 records shipped.

In sports people often argue about stats put up during expansion seasons vs seasons with less watered down competition.. They  argue about rule changes, and in general, the style of the game and  how can one judge one record vs. another…

So it kinda begs the question, What does a gold record mean in 2011?

I don’t think I even have to explain that this is a dying industry. Didn’t Souljah Boy do like 8,000 last week?

CCAD Graduate Michael Carney Nominated For a Grammy For Work With The Black Keys

Mike Carney is from Akron, but between his time at CCAD and work with Columbus Discount Records, Weedsteeler, and art collectives like 3CB/PBJ/BSA, Carney definitely was huge part of Columbus.

from the Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Black Keys, the blues-rock duo featuring Akron natives Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, received Grammy Award nominations in four categories, including best alternative music album for their latest release, “Brothers.”

Catching up with Brian Harnetty

If I were to scribble my own Overlooked in Ohio piece, Brian Harnetty would likely be my artist of choice. I’ve written about Columbus’s gentle giant quite a few times, and I began wondering what Harnetty has been up to lately. Turns out, quite a bit.

Like he did for his collaboration with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Silent City, and his previous full-length, American Winter, Harnetty continues his excavation of the Berea College Appalachian Sound Archives in Kentucky, finding old folk songs, interviews and other odds & ends from Appalachia and layering the found sounds with his own instrumentation. His new album will be called Rawhead & Bloodybones, and it’s a collection of old archival folk tales as told by children. “The combination of the children’s innocence and the often gruesome tales is a pretty powerful combination already. I added some instrumental parts, and other samples,” Harnetty says. This one will be out in late winter/early spring of next year — on vinyl this time, too.

Harnetty also has a sound installation that will open Nov. 12 at a sound art gallery called the Audible Gallery, which is part of the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. The installation is based on the archives of enigmatic jazz musician Sun Ra. (He’s hopeful that this, too, may become an album, pending permission from the Sun Ra archives trustees.) Full description of the installation below. I particularly like this excerpt from Harnetty: “I am not a jazz musician. I cannot lay claim to Sun Ra’s history, nor can I ever fully understand him or his music. But I can listen, intently, and enter a dialogue, bringing my own knowledge and thought and experience.”
